McAfee Outscores Blue Coat, Websense and Cisco IronPort in Comparative Review
SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 16 - McAfee today announced that its Web Gateway solution achieved the best malware detection results in a comparative review performed by AV-Test.Org. In the test, commissioned by McAfee, McAfee reached the highest overall score and highest individual scores for three distinct gateway malware test cases, outscoring three other web gateway security solutions tested in this roundup: Blue Coat, Websense and Cisco IronPort.
“This test is external validation that McAfee’s gateway anti-malware engine is the most effective anti-malware solution for today’s dynamic web-borne threat landscape,” said Marc Olesen, senior vice president and general manager, Content & Cloud Security, McAfee. “We use this engine in our McAfee® Web Gateway appliances as well as in the McAfee® SaaS Web Protection solution to enable businesses to effectively use the Web while securing their organizations by continually raising the bar for unparalleled threat protection across the broad spectrum of malware.”
The review tested the ability to stop malware at the web gateway, prior to reaching the desktop. The testing consisted of turning on all security offered by the solutions: signature-based detection options, proactive detection options which work on both known and unknown vulnerabilities and malware, including zero-day malware, and all the cloud threat intelligence options that any of the solutions might offer. McAfee products outscored the competition in all test areas:
“Prior to December of 2010, the City of Saint Paul had no protection from malware introduced via Web traffic. In December, we purchased two McAfee Web Gateway appliances,” said Elizabeth Swanson, operations manager for the Office of Technology and Communication for the City of Saint Paul. “The appliances have been installed, configured and deployed to our test environment. Our test environment is approximately 1/4 of our customer base (750 workstations). Our satisfaction with this anti-malware product was immediate. We can view the blocks as they are occurring which is awesome. On a daily basis, using 1/4 of our customer base, we are blocking 950+ malware URLs and 1150+ malware. Our plan is to deploy this fully to the rest of the City's 3000 workstations in March of this year. We intend to watch the malware blocks grow exponentially.”
McAfee Web Security is available in a choice of deployment options: hardware, virtual appliance-based gateway or SaaS. All deployment options utilize the McAfee anti-malware engine in addition to signature and reputation based protection for Web 2.0 threats. The McAfee gateway anti-malware engine analyzes the nature and intent of all content and code entering the network via requested web pages, and providing immediate protection against malware and other hidden threats.
