SANTA CLARA, CA – October 1, 2007 – McAfee, Inc. (NYSE: MFE) today announced its 2008 security solutions will provide consumers with the industry’s first triple-play protection, securing consumers’ PCs, Web experiences, and mobile phones with one offering to lead the industry with security solutions unavailable anywhere else.
“This year, consumers will benefit from triple-play protection from McAfee,” said Todd Gebhart, senior vice president and general manager, McAfee Consumer, Mobile and Small Business. “Not only have we added additional anti-threat technologies for the PC unavailable from competitors, but we have trumped the competition once again with the only safe search and surf technology integrated into our consumer security suites. With 4 out of 5 Web site visits starting with search, if consumers do not have safe search and surf technology for all of the “on ramps” to the Internet, they are not protected—and McAfee is the only one to offer it.
“In addition, for the first time, we are introducing triple play protection for the PC, Web and mobile. Today's cell phones have become increasingly popular with more PC-like features. Mobile viruses and spyware threaten devices and personal information. McAfee is the only company to offer protection on these three critical platforms in a single solution, and we think it’s an exciting offer for consumers.”
McAfee 2008 Consumer Security Software Highlights
INDUSTRY FIRST: IntegratedSafe Search and Surf protection provides advanced warning protection to help consumers avoid the dark alleys of the Internet.
Through detailed proprietary testing of the Internet, McAfee is the first to offer consumers proactive protection for 95% of the trafficked Web, a critical level of protection since 4 out of 5 consumers’ visits to Web sites start with a Web search. McAfee’s safe search and surf technology adds easy-to-read red, yellow, or green ratings to sites clearly indicating whether a site is safe or risky BEFORE consumers visit them, which helps them avoid malware such as browser exploits that make the PC inoperable, as well as adware, spam, viruses and other online dangers.
This year, in the Total Protection suite, McAfee enhanced its safe search and surf capabilities by adding “Protected Mode” which enforces safety ratings. Protected Mode provides parents with important child protection capabilities by redirecting kids, teens (or any other user) to a safe page anytime their computer is about to interact with a risky site, whether through searching, browsing, instant messaging or e-mailing. Protected Mode is password protected, enabling parents to control this feature.
Kids and teens’ use of the Internet is known to be unsafe. For example 83% of teens download music, 64% use illegal music download sites; and “digital music” is the riskiest search term on the Internet. In addition, studies have found that more than 70 million consumers use social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook, and 82% download unknown files—another risky behavior.
INDUSTRY FIRST: Proactive Protection for Mobile Phones In One Security Offering.
Mobile threats—viruses, worms, spyware, phishing, spam and trojans—have become a reality on mobile devices and mobile networks. When phones are affected by malware, they can cease working, subscribers can experience financial loss through account abuse or compromise, and consumers’ private files, photos and other information can be jeopardized, erased, or exposed. Contributing to the problem is the fact that most consumers are unaware of mobile threats and protection is not widely embedded into mobile devices.
As McAfee continues to work with mobile operators and phone manufacturers to integrate security into mobile devices, customers can get an extra level of proactive protection through the purchase of McAfee Internet Security Suite and McAfee Total Protection both of which will include VirusScan Mobile at no additional charge. This offer is initially compatible with Microsoft Windows Mobile devices, and is scheduled for availability in late October. When the product is available, consumers can visit www.mcafee.com to determine mobile device compatibility in addition to terms and conditions.
“As the leader in mobile security, our core technology has been installed on more than 50 million devices,” added Gebhart. “Our depth of expertise in the mobile space and our experience in the consumer environment enabled us to create the first security offering spanning the PC, Web and mobile—a protection ‘triple play.’”
McAfee VirusScan Mobile is redesigned from the ground-up for mobile protection. It protects against the threats that originate from e-mail, instant messaging, applications and multimedia downloads. Consumers’ devices will be protected from SMS, MMS, Bluetooth and other entry points.
INDUSTRY FIRST: The ONLY email and Instant Messaging proactive protection service in the market.
With the explosion of Instant Messaging use by kids and teens, and a 79% increase* in IM threats from 2006 to 2007, McAfee now embeds Web site ratings in IM, as well as links that appear in email, providing consumers with critical levels of new protection.
INDUSTRY FIRST: Protection without Interference—the right security for work applications (Microsoft Office, Microsoft PowerPoint), gamers (World of Warcraft, CounterStrike, etc.), users of YouTube (www.youtube.com) and other multimedia users.
To meet the needs of the six out of ten Americans who watch online videos, “Protection without Interference” intelligence lets consumers enjoy videos, online games, and other online entertainment, or run a PowerPoint presentation or other business applications without interruption when they are in full screen mode. It works by minimizing computing resources while intelligently deferring scheduled security tasks, including program updates and scans, until a more appropriate time. When the computer is first powered-up, this feature automatically waits for a few moments before updating the security software, giving consumers an opportunity to check email or go online without the PC slowing down.
INDUSTRY FIRST: McAfee introduces “Unified Licensing” with special introductory pricing. Hassle-free subscription management for multiple PC’s.
Unified Licensing makes it easy for consumers to add additional subscriptions as they add PC’s to their home. Easy to install from the web or from a CD, additional McAfee software licenses are added to consumers’ “My Account” subscription management system and the license term is automatically matched to the term of the existing subscription license. Unified Licensing gives the consumer the benefits of 1) easily adding new licenses only when they need them, 2) paying only for the licenses they need (not being required to buy a new three user product when they need only one additional license) and 3) matching the term of their new license with the term of their existing license, making it easy to track renewal dates of all licenses and save money. They pay for what they use.
To celebrate the launch of the industry’s first “Unified Licensing” feature, consumers can buy security subscriptions for additional PCs in the household for a $10 introductory price after the purchase of the initial license.**
INDUSTRY FIRST: Version-less Software` is true Security-as-a-Service—more than just a subscription, McAfee customers get access to 2008 features transparently and automatically.
McAfee makes it easy for consumers to stay protected. Industry-first “versionless” software means users of McAfee security products automatically receive enhancements, upgrades, new features, patches, fixes and new releases transparently and automatically when they access the Internet WITHOUT the need to uninstall their current software and re-install new software as is the need with other security software products.
Seamlessly integrated versionless software is true Security as a Service—and much more than just subscriptionlicensing which is a business model and not an advanced technology capability. McAfee research shows that approximately 65% of consumers who are required to perform interactive updates or upgrades postpone them. This leaves those users exposed to new threats. McAfee’s Security-as-a-Service, using our advanced versionless software technology, provides McAfee customers with the greatest level of security protection and the newest features and enhancements, free of charge during the term of their service agreement, and they get these features automatically when they are released. For example, McAfee deployed anti-phishing protection to tens of millions of customers automatically and transparently.
IMPROVED: Advanced protection against identity theft.
In the 2008 release, McAfee has enhanced a number of its unique technologies which warn consumers about phishers, hacker activity, and identity thieves:
In addition to the enhanced protections above, McAfee 2008 also includes a firewall Stealth Mode, which lets consumers hide their identities and presence on the Internet, making their PCs invisible to hackers. Stealth Mode was first integrated into the McAfee software in 2007.
The Most Comprehensive Protection Available
McAfee’s next-generation security is available in three different suites: McAfee Total Protection, McAfee Internet Security Suite, and McAfee VirusScan® Plus.
McAfee Total Protection is the most comprehensive consumer security product on the market and features all of McAfee’s protections in one suite.
It provides real-time protection against viruses, spyware and hackers, along with McAfee SiteAdvisor™ advanced warning protection. Specific technologies include anti-virus, anti-spyware, a two-way firewall, anti-phishing; McAfee SystemGuards, which watch the PC and warn about specific behaviors that may signal virus, spyware, or hacker activity; rootkit scanning, which detects and removes rootkits and other malicious applications that hide from Windows and other anti-virus programs; Script Scanner which blocks malicious scripts and other exploits while a consumer surfs the Web; and Shedder, which allows users to digitally “shred” confidential files. It also provides protection against online identity theft, and offers anti-spam protection, and parental controls that allow parents to set individual time limits and restrictions for each child, and includes powerful image analysis that prevents children from viewing inappropriate images.
In addition to all of the features listed above, McAfee Total Protection also offers powerful security features like Link Checker that checks the safety of links in popular email and instant messaging applications along with Protected Mode that blocks access to dangerous ‘red’ and ‘yellow’-rated Web sites without a password. In addition, McAfee Total Protection provides features like Easy Network that makes it easy for consumers to set up and manage home networks and share printers and files. McAfee Total Protection also includes Network Manager that allows consumers to view the security status on other PCs connected to the home network and fix security issues with a single mouse click. A backup feature is also included that protects and restores files, photos and vital records on an external hard drive or recordable CDs or DVDs.
McAfee Internet Security Suite includes all of the protections above with the exception of Link Checker, Protected Mode, and Easy Network.
McAfee VirusScan Plus is McAfee’s entry level suite, featuring anti-virus, anti-spyware, a two-way firewall, anti-phishing, McAfee SystemGuards, rootkit scanning, Script Scanner and Shredder.
All McAfee suites include PC health features to help consumers eliminate the clutter from their computer, and McAfee’s unique security-as-a-service model.
