McAfee Family Protection Major Upgrade Delivers Peace of Mind for Parents

SANTA CLARA, Calif., 7 juin 2011 - McAfee today announced product enhancements to support the digital lifestyle of today’s modern family with a major upgrade to McAfee® Family Protection, a software program that protects children of all ages from online risks while allowing them the freedom to safely explore the Internet.

New features in McAfee Family Protection include:

  • Age-Appropriate Settings – What is okay for teens is not always appropriate for tweens;
  • Filtering for Internet TV, Music and Online Games – Too much Hulu for Johnny? Parents can decide what rating of content he has access to. Types of filtering include:
    • TV shows based on their MPAA ratings for many popular online TV sites
    • Songs with explicit lyrics from iTunes
    • Access to online gaming sites
  • Search Engine Integration – Top search engines Google, Bing, MSN, Yahoo!, YouTube, Ask, Lycos, and Hot Bot have a feature that filters out explicit, adult content from search results. McAfee Family Protection automatically turns the search engine's filter back "on" if kids try to shut it off, and logs their search history;
  • Enhanced Remote Device Management – Allows parents to change settings when away from home;
  • Email Activity Reports – Allows parents to get activity reports of their kids’ computer usage on a scheduled basis. The reports provide the types of information parents need to have a meaningful dialogue with their kids about their online behavior.

Teen Use of the Internet and New Parenting Challenges
Recent statistics show that most teens are using the Internet more than ever, and often in ways that their parents don’t know about:

  • 59% of teens said they know how to hide what they do online from their parents1
  • 73% of teens use social networking sites2
  • 75% view videos on video-sharing sites3
  • 62% use instant messaging4
  • 33% swap music and video files on file sharing networks like LimeWire or FrostWire5

“Online concerns for tweens and teens are not what they were two years ago,” said Todd Gebhart, executive vice president and general manager, McAfee Consumer, Mobile and Small Business. “McAfee Family Protection gives parents a powerful tool for understanding how their kids use the Internet. Parents can choose to block categories of sites, filter out only a handful of sites, or block nothing at all and simply review online activity reports. McAfee Family Protection gives parents the power of knowledge. Knowing what their kids are doing online gives them the opportunity to engage in a dialogue with them. When parents talk to their kids at home, they’re more likely to be responsible Internet users outside the home as well.”

In addition to music, TV and game filtering, McAfee Family Protection offers a host of essential features to help protect families do the following:

  • Web blocking allows parents to block up to 35 categories of objectionable web sites and filter inappropriate content;
  • Encrypted website blocking blocks teens from accessing proxy sites so they cannot try to bypass content filters;
  • Program blocking enables parents to block any program, including file sharing networks which can lead to malware infections on PCs;
  • Instant messaging monitoring enables parents to monitor and record complete instant message conversations to alert them of improper dialogue with strangers;
  • Time limits help families manage the amount of time their children spend online: families are able to set the day and/or time for when their child can access the Internet;
  • Email blocking pre-approves email accounts that a child is able to access and blocks emails from unknown sources;
  • Instant email or text alerts can be sent to parents when access to objectionable material is attempted;
  • Social network filtering records all social network postings that contain profanity and posts that include confidential information that has been predetermined by parent--such as a home address, phone, school name, etc.;
  • YouTube filtering technology blocks the viewing of objectionable videos without blocking access to all of YouTube.

McAfee Family Protection incorporates technology from McAfee® Safe Eyes® software, which has won the following awards:

  • Ranked #1 in parental control programs in the European Commission Report, earning the highest overall score of 29 filtering products
  • The National Parenting Center’s 2011 Seal of Approval two years in a row
