Vulnerabilities, Malware, Phishing, Spam and Hoaxes

McAfee, Inc. (NYSE: MFE), the global leader in intrusion prevention and security risk management, today unveiled the McAfee(R) Threat Center, a new portal that defines, in one location, the most relevant security information, tools and insights. The Threat Center is part of the new McAfee Web site re-design and can be viewed at http://www.mcafee.com/us/threat_center/default.asp .

The McAfee Threat Center presents detailed analysis and commentary on emerging, current and past malware, vulnerabilities, potentially unwanted programs (PUPs), phishing and spam. It tracks these threats as they relate to all forms of system, network and messaging security threats, including hoaxes.

Visitors to the Center will find one-click access, intuitive navigation and clear, straightforward content as well as access to the following features:

  • Simplified navigation of the McAfee AVERT(R) Labs Threat Information Library -- visitors can more easily browse AVERT's threat database, which contains over 180,000 malware, vulnerability, threat and Potentially Unwanted Program definitions
  • New Global Threat Condition -- combines all threat information into a single warning system, based on critical, severe, elevated and low ratings of threats
  • New information on spam, phishing and vulnerabilities -- includes spam categories, tips to avoid spam, top ten spam subject lines, current vulnerabilities and top phishing scams
  • Security Insights -- a new section that provides timely and relevant opinion articles from McAfee experts
  • Free Tools -- includes free system malware checking and removal, DAT signature file status and malware submissions
  • AVERT Virus Alerts -- easy to find opt-in section for McAfee's free subscription service, which distributes email updates to inform subscribers of the latest information regarding threats assessed as "Low" or above.

"The new Web site is a substantial improvement -- it isn't just a face-lift; but a complete overhaul of the content, user interface and backend architecture," said Stuart McClure, senior vice president of global threats, McAfee, Inc.  "Through the new Threat Center, consumers and businesses alike can access a simplified, single portal backed by McAfee AVERT Labs' world-class malicious code, anti-virus, vulnerability research and general threat expertise. Here, they will find the tools they need to learn and react more rapidly to evolving threats."
