McAfee Anti-Virus Engine and Product Support Lifecycle

May 12, 2008

This page has been designed as a reference guide for all McAfee business-to-business products and the Anti-Virus Engine, providing information on current and previous versions of the Engine and products and providing advance notification of End-of-Support or End-of-Life milestones. This page does not cover McAfee products sold in retail outlets

Full Support = Engine + Product

In order for a product that uses the McAfee Scan Engine to be fully supported, a supported product version and a supported scan engine must both be deployed. If either the product version or the scan engine is not supported, then the total product configuration is not supported. Full details on the support of End Of Sale products can be found in the McAfee Technical Support Terms & Conditions.

Supported Scan Engine Matrix

Please see KB#613441 for additional details on the release of the 5200 engine.

Definition of Terms: End of Support. New virus signature files (DATs) and new product releases are no longer tested with the engine. Incompatibilities that may exist between an unsupported engine and new DATs or new products will not be discovered prior to release and will not be repaired.

General Policies

  • When a new version of a product is released, the previous version is supported for at least 12 months.
  • New virus signature files - DATs - (released weekly) and Engine upgrades are tested for compatibility with supported products. Older products, not included in the supported product matrix, are not tested for compatibility with new DATs or Engine upgrades. If you run a new Engine with a product not included in the supported product matrix, you are running an unsupported configuration.
  • HotFixes (short-term 'fixes' for known product issues) and service packs are provided for the current product release only. Once end-of-life for a product or platform is announced, no further HotFixes or service packs will be released unless specifically included in the EOL plan. However, DAT and Engine support is provided until end-of-life.

Service Packs

  • When a service pack is released for a product, the product without the service pack is supported for six (6) months. After six months, only the product with the service pack is supported.
  • When a service pack is released for a product, new virus signature files are tested on the original release without the service pack for six months, as well as on the product with the service pack. After six months, compatibility testing is performed only on the product with the service pack.
  • Please note that the Engine Support policy also applies to the VirusScan Command Line Scanner Products as they are dependent upon the engine.

ThreatScan 2.1 is incompatible with ePO 3.5. EOL for ThreatScan 2.1 has already been announced to be December 31, 2004.
Technical Support:
From the release of ePO 3.5 (August 23, 2004) through EOS for ePO 3.0.2 (Q405), technical support for ThreatScan 2.5 will be limited to trouble shooting, best effort workarounds, and module updates only. No changes of any type including module updates will be made after ThreatScan 2.5 EOL (Q405), subject to any negotiated Custom Support agreements.
Custom Support will be available, subject to separately negotiated terms and conditions. Otherwise, customers who have licenses for the product that extend past EOL (Q405) will use the product at their own risk.
Migration Path:
System Compliance Profiler, an integrated module of ePO 3.x, and ePO 3.5's Rogue System Detection will incorporate key capabilities of ThreatScan, for example, Microsoft patch assessment and detection of rogue, unmanaged systems. Plans are in progress to provide customers with superior value and capabilities in 2005 and 2006.
