Most technology professionals expect continued growth for cloud computing providers during the next few years, prompting many venture capitalists to invest in the technology.
According to CB Insights, venture investment in cloud-based companies accounted for 26.5 percent of internet deal volume during the fourth quarter of last year. Meanwhile, 34.5 percent of internet investment dollars were for cloud companies, the report said.
The report's cloud category included Platform-as-a-Service, Software-as-a-Service and cloud storage providers, but excluded some companies that offer only limited cloud services.
A recent GigaOM report examined CB Insight's findings, and said categorizing cloud computing investments can be difficult, as many new companies with various services claim to have cloud capabilities.
"If you’re talking about pure cloud infrastructure, I'd say there are a good number of deals done there and they’re going up sequentially," Paul Santinelli, general partner at North Bridge Venture Partners, told GagaOM.
According to a recent Network Computing report, small and medium-sized businesses will adopt cloud storage solutions this year, and >hybrid cloud environments will be a popular option. Hybrid cloud computing enables companies to secure their private data on site, while receiving the cost-cutting and productivity gains the public cloud provides.
