According to a recent survey commissioned by Citrix, American consumers are confused about cloud services. Even regular users of the cloud do not know what it is.
When asked what the cloud refers to, the majority of respondents did not associate the term with IT business nor were they familiar with cloud functions.
In the survey of over 1,000 American adults, Citrix found that only 16 percent of respondents knew that the cloud refers to a network that stores data that can be accessed through any device.
About 68 percent of respondents realized the economic benefits of the cloud once they were informed of its purpose. Consumers recognize that cloud computing can help lower costs (35 percent), spur small business growth (32 percent) and encourage consumer interaction (35 percent), which reaffirms how useful cloud computing can be to a business.
Consumers access the cloud daily
The majority of respondents (54 percent) believe they don't use the cloud. Other respondents (22 percent) admitted to pretending to know what the cloud is. The survey, however, shows that 95 percent of unaware cloud users access cloud programs on a regular basis via online shopping (63 percent), banking (65 percent) or social networking (58 percent).
"This survey clearly shows that the cloud phenomenon is taking root in our mainstream culture, yet there is still a wide gap between the perceptions and realities of cloud computing," said Citrix Vice President of Corporate Marketing, Kim DeCarlis.
Although cloud security is still a major concern, 59 percent of survey respondents understand the cloud will soon become the "workplace of the future." If businesses want to succeed, they should educate their employees on cloud solutions and their benefits.
