While a move to the cloud is frequently an attractive prospect for a number of reasons, companies need to be sure that they don't let ongoing issues like security suffer as a result of the transition, market research firm Gartner said.

According to a recent report from the tech industry analysis firm, both cloud computing and outsourced services have potential drawbacks that CIOs must bear in mind. Gartner researcher vice president Frank Ridder said being informed is among the best weapons against these pitfalls.

"Cloud computing is driving discontinuity that introduces exciting opportunities and costly challenges. Organizations need to understand these changes and develop realistic cloud sourcing strategies and contracts that can reduce risk," he said in a statement.

Looking ahead to the future - where the cloud might be in, say, 10 years' time - could be crucial for successful adoption as well, Gartner added.
