The different methods IT departments can use to migrate existing applications into cloud computing frameworks were discussed in a recent Gartner Research report.
Experts at the tech analysis firm noted that there were trade-offs involved in every basic cloud migration technique, from rehosting to replacement.
One option that might be best for IT professionals not working under a tight schedule is revision, according to Gartner. A complete retooling of a given application to let it take full advantage of its host platform will likely produce good results. However, the researchers said, this requires a significant investment of developer time and resources.
Going down the opposite road, the need to get a cloud application up and running quickly could prompt an IT staff to completely junk an existing product and simply purchase a SaaS offering from a third party, Gartner said.
Other experts pointed out, however, that significant attention must be paid to service level agreements and security measures when considering a SaaS option.
