New threats to information security continue to emerge, experts told Help Net Security in a recent interview, but IT departments also have many new options for keeping their data safe.

Despite the qualms some security professionals have about cloud computing - having to send and receive highly sensitive information to and from a third-party contractor rankles somewhat with many tech workers - IBM security experts told the tech news publication that the framework actually provides the opportunity for improvements.

According to Latha Maripuri and Marc van Zadelhoff, new cloud systems mean that security can be integrated as a basic feature from the ground up, rather than added later as in many traditional setups. This means, they told Help Net, the new technology makes data more - not less - secure.

If contracting with a third-party vendor, however, other experts warn that it's important to go over the security measures in place on the service provider's end. Ideally, they say, it's probably best to have floor-to-ceiling encryption for all communications and storage.
