Australian companies report increased emphasis on online presence

Nearly 70 percent of Australian businesses responding to the latest Sage SME Business Sentiment Index said that a presence on the internet is essential to future viability.

Growth, rather than general adoption, is the current trend in Australia, however. The Sage survey found numerous statistics suggesting that, while companies are alive to the potential upsides of better IT services, most have not taken advantage of new technology.

For example, the researchers said, almost two-thirds of respondents agreed that integrated software, rather than stand-alone products, was a more efficient way to handle such needs. However, 67 percent said they didn't have any type of integrated software in their organization.

Nevertheless, the Sage study and others have found a growing interest among small businesses in cloud computing technology as a way to help provide powerful IT functionality at a reduced cost. This could mean that small firms in Australia and elsewhere may be preparing to make significant new investments in IT capabilities, particularly given the continuing recovery from the recent recession and the improved business climate it has provided.
