Despite a general consensus among small businesses that there are significant benefits to be had from a transition to a cloud-based model of IT, a recent study commissioned by cloud hosting provider Verio demonstrated a lack of detailed understanding of the framework.
Verio senior director of managed computing solutions Mitch Merrifield said the findings represented an opportunity for cloud computing providers.
"This data clearly demonstrates that there continues to be a need for educating SMBs on the benefits of cloud and more importantly, correlating those benefits to their current IT requirements," he stated.
The company said there was a greater willingness seen among small business decision-makers to spend significantly on new IT solutions, as the number of respondents looking to shrink their IT investment dropped from 30 percent in 2010 to 19 percent this year.
The benefits of the cloud, experts say, center on the framework's efficiency and consequently improved cost-effectiveness. This can be particularly helpful for small businesses that lack the internal capacity to perform some tasks.
