Cloud computing moving to larger businesses

While small businesses and entrepreneurs are still the heaviest users of cloud computing technology, a study recently released by service provider Egnyte shows that larger companies are becoming more involved as well.

Comparing the numbers of large businesses testing Egnyte's cloud storage service between March 2010 and March 2011 reveals a 2.5-fold increase, the company says. Although this is still less than the three-fold increase seen among smaller firms, it represents further evidence of the expanding influence of the cloud. Cloud storage is one of the most widely used cloud computing technologies, experts note, with online backup services providing a relatively hassle-free way to avoid permanent data loss.

Egnyte's increased sales among bigger businesses could indicate that the efficiencies and flexibility provided by cloud computing can be successfully scaled in order to make them useful for companies of any size.

The two primary attractions of the cloud are cost and accessibility. Cloud data and applications can be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection, and the service is frequently cheaper than constructing and operating one in-house.
