Despite residual debate over security and compatibility issues in the cloud, IT Pro pundit Davey Winder urges companies to bow to the inevitable and "embrace the goddamn cloud" already.
Winder's irritation, he writes, is directed at the tendency of IT managers and government offices like the European Commission for prolonging the arguments unnecessarily.
"I just kind of wish that the EC, and everyone else for that matter, would just get on with it. This whole cloud adoption by committee approach seems to be dragging like a pig in flippers through business in general," he says.
Numerous studies, according to Winder, have demonstrated the monetary benefits of cloud computing, as well as the fact that more widespread uptake of the technology has the potential to create hundreds of thousands of new jobs in the European market alone.
According to the views of Winder and other experts, using cloud computing is a topic corporate IT departments should be approaching from the viewpoint of "when and how" rather than "if." While it's commendable to want to learn all the necessary details of the new system, time is passing quickly and competitive advantage is already a concern.
