Study: IT spending growth for SMBs rises with no end in sight

Spending on new IT products and services among small- and medium-sized businesses, a report from IDC found recently, has increased sharply of late, and the trend shows no signs of petering out in 2011.

Despite the fact that access to credit remains relatively scarce and the job market has not appreciably improved, both the total amount of money spent by SMBs and the share of total enterprise IT spending attributable to those companies rose in 2010, the researchers found.

This, according to IDC senior research analyst Justin Jaffe, could represent a golden opportunity for companies that supply some of the tech world's hot new items, like cloud computing services.

"Vendors that understand how changing economic conditions and emerging technologies are affecting IT acquisition for different company size segments will have a considerable advantage in developing and marketing technology products and services for SMBs," he stated.

The recession, outside experts say, may have prompted a stronger swing toward cloud computing than might otherwise have been seen, given the necessity of opting for efficiency during tough economic times.
