An umbrella group announced this week that its new set of best practices and standards for cloud computing and other new enterprise IT technologies will provoke a renewed round of investment in such systems.
The Open Data Center Alliance said that, in addition to a new wave of investment, its new guidelines will have a significant influence on its member organizations and the vendors that support them. The group also stated that organizations could realize savings totaling $25 billion in the next five years if its recommendations are adopted.
The lack of general standards and practices in the still-young cloud computing industry has meant that many businesses have avoided the technology, due to security and management concerns. The ODCA asserted that its new set of expert guidelines could go a long way toward alleviating many of those worries.
It's incumbent on companies moving to the cloud to implement the strongest possible security measures, but cloud frameworks can also provide the opportunity for significant improvements by limiting the target surface available to malware and hackers, experts say.
