The time for IPv6 transition is now, thanks to the cloud

With the supply of internet addresses based on the old IPv4 protocol drying up, it's high time businesses moved to the newer IPv6 system, research company Neustar asserted in a recent statement.

"A proper transition from IPv4 to IPv6 is integral to the future of conducting business via the internet. It is important to recognize the transition cannot be handled in a hasty and piecemeal fashion," warned advanced technology group vice president Tom McGarry.

McGarry's company said that it noted a nearly three-fold increase in the number of IPv6 queries seen between May 2010 and May 2011, indicating that the switch is already under way.

The high demand is being fueled in part by the twin demands of cloud computing and increasing mobile internet device use, Neustar stated.

Another digital resource companies will need plenty of to cope with cloud computing systems is bandwidth, according to experts. Constantly moving large amounts of data between users and the cloud could put a strain on outdated systems, making a network upgrade a potentially solid investment.
