Government efforts to promote cloud computing continue

Adopting cloud computing across numerous federal government departments and agencies continues to be a high priority task for federal CIO Vivek Kundra, he recently told Politico.

While he admitted that cloud security concerns still weigh heavily on the minds of many IT experts, Kundra also said that having Security as a Service in place at some government departments would be a marked improvement from current conditions, according to the news source.

"In some cases, I would argue that there are agencies that I would actually want them to be in the cloud because their security practices are horrible," he told the website.

Cloud security is nevertheless firmly at the forefront of his efforts, Kundra said. The federal CIO told Politico that the government wouldn't rush its cloud computing transition at the expense of security.

Getting badly outdated computing systems up to date and creating cost savings in IT have been public priorities for the Obama administration since it took office, according to experts, and cloud computing is widely touted as a solution to both issues.
