Survey: Impetus for cloud computing adoption growing

Vendors and end-users alike are seeing the possibilities inherent in cloud computing systems, a survey from North Bridge Venture Partners found recently.

A long-term picture of cloud computing motivations is emerging, according to the researchers. In addition to the well-known short-term attractions of cost effectiveness and flexibility, IT professionals are looking to the cloud to differentiate themselves from the competition, capitalize on the possibilities of enterprise mobility, and ensure interoperability, they said.

"The respondents' interests in developing cloud-based solutions for new areas that will also support mobility and competitive advantage in the future are challenging organizations to think differently about their IT strategies, deployment of resources and how to invest smartly in the cloud," said Michael Skok, North Bridge general partner.

The study also found that more than half of respondents said there were lower total costs of ownership for cloud computing systems, and that almost three-quarters said there would be more hiring for IT jobs as a result.

The need for cloud computing security services will also likely increase as this transition progresses, outside experts say.
