Several important trends in enterprise IT were identified in Gartner's most recent CIO Agenda report, including an increased emphasis on delivering value via the use of cloud computing.

The technology was highlighted as one of the most common ways in which CIOs are re-working their companies' technological infrastructure in order to provide better efficiency and, consequently, value.

According to Gartner, roughly half of CIOs surveyed for the report said that they would have the majority of the important functions of their department running in some form of cloud computing environment over the next four years.

"Infrastructure technologies, such as virtualization and cloud computing, enable CIOs to generate resources to support innovation, growth, and strategy," the researchers said, calling the process of a cloud computing transition "creative destruction."

Expertise with the newer technology, however, is likely to be at a premium in the near future, as the cloud grows in popularity. In particular, professionals with a working knowledge of Security-as-a-Service could become highly sought-after, experts say, given security's role as one of the most-debated aspects of the cloud.
