The adoption of cloud computing among federal agencies, according to Government Computer News (GCN), may be problematic for several reasons, but security is the least of them.
At up to moderate risk levels, one contracting executive told the publication, "security is the most soluble problem that the cloud has."
Instead, excessive caution is likely to be the most serious problem for cloud computing adoption at the federal level, GCN said. Many sources told the publication that waiting for the perfect solution to be developed would likely result in an endless delay.
A shortage of government IT personnel with cloud computing experience is another difficulty that must be overcome, according to GCN. This shortfall hampers the government's efforts to update its systems in a number of important ways.
Regardless of delays in the public sector, the private one is moving to the cloud en masse. While the technology is still not considered fully mature, the possible advantages that can be realized from its use are not in dispute, experts say.
