Gartner: 3 keys to managing big data

As the amount of data companies generate continues to grow at an alarming rate, a recent Gartner report suggested there are three areas on which business should focus to address this growth: volume, variety, and velocity.

The issue of volume goes beyond the amount of data a company must store. It also includes the amount of data a company must process. Companies that fail to account for this are likely to run into "massive analysis issues," Gartner noted.

Furthermore, with the rise of video, social media, email, and other data sources, companies have to handle more information types than ever before. A company not prepared to deal with this variety may have trouble converting this wealth of information into an advantage.

Finally, the rate at which data is accessed and delivered has increased drastically in recent years. As Gartner pointed out, this can be a significant issue for big data, as companies need to find ways to utilize the information to make sound business decisions.

One strategy that has proven to be effective for many companies is deploying a cloud computing solution. Through the cloud, experts say, businesses can improve storage, security, and efficiency of their IT solutions for relatively affordable costs.
