Given the fact that security has long been an inhibitor of the cloud, analysts from research firm Gartner recently asserted that companies need to address this issue today to avoid challenges tomorrow, TechTarget reported.
Speaking at the 2011 Gartner Security & Risk Management summit, Gartner vice president and distinguished analyst John Pescatore asserted that cloud vendors cannot sit idle and count on security issues to fix themselves.
"So from the user perspective there are a lot of rewards, and from the CIO’s perspective it’s saving a lot of money, but from the attacker’s perspective it’s opening up new paths to go after users,” said Pescatore. “There’s a lot of new risk.”
Despite Pescatore's warning, a recent study from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers found interoperability, rather than security, will be the main challenge of future cloud growth. As more companies deploy the cloud, vendors will need to introduce more ways to ensure multiple platforms can interact with one another.
