IDC: Private, public cloud server markets on the incline

With the rapid adoption of cloud computing among both enterprise and consumer users, the next four years are expected to be favorable for the global server market.

According to a recent report from research firm IDC, the number of servers shipped between 2011 and 2015 will see a compound annual growth rate of 20 percent — thanks in large part to increased public and private cloud deployments.

The public cloud server market, specifically, is expected to reach $3.6 billion by the end of the forecast period, with more than 1.2 million units shipped.

The private cloud server market, meanwhile, is forecast to reach $5.8 billion by 2015, with a CAGR of 22.4 percent. Shipments are only expected to reach 570,000 units, IDC noted, but the greater market value is due to larger converged systems needed in private cloud environments.

This market growth signals an increased confidence in the cloud. As businesses become more familiar with the technology, they are more likely to deploy services for a growing number of solutions, including email, storage, and even security.
