Mobile phone biometrics market poised for growth

With the rise of advanced mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, it is growing increasingly evident that businesses and consumers need to do more to protect themselves from data threats. As this development continues to evolve, the global mobile phone security market is expected to grow.

According to a recent report from Goode Intelligence, one mobile security area, in particular, that is poised to see significant growth is biometrics. In 2011, the market for mobile phone biometrics is expected to reach around $30 million. However, by 2015, Goode Intelligence predicted, the market will surpass $161 million.

Biometrics technology uses unique physical or behavior traits, such as fingerprint or face recognition, to identify a person. When applied to mobile devices, the technique could be used to scan a person's fingerprint, for example, before allowing access to the device's main menu. Though the technology may sound like something from a James Bond movie, it could have a significant impact in military or law enforcement fields.

Another area where security needs to develop is mobile banking. According to a recent study from YouGov and Antenna Software, one in three Americans use their mobile devices to conduct banking transactions. As this trend continues to grow, security measures will need to be taken to ensure financial data is not lost or stolen.
