Many companies have found that deploying cloud computing solutions enables them to rely on fewer IT applications and affords numerous performance benefits. However, as the cloud continues to develop, some IT executives are questioning how the roles of IT operations will change.
In a recent survey of 100 IT decision-makers conducted by Gatepoint Research, nearly 80 percent of respondents indicated they are using some form of cloud computing. The study found that many of the respondents see the cloud as a means of simplifying IT functions and costs.
However, at the same time, the emergence of the cloud has raised questions about the future of IT. According to the report, many respondents expect to reduce their IT staff and tools as they continue to deploy more cloud solutions.
Other experts have said however that the emergence of the cloud will merely shift IT roles rather than diminish them. In an interview with the Register, former IBM research director Marin Litoiu asserted that the cloud will require IT professionals to develop new skills, but it will also allow staff to focus more on innovation within a company.
