Many companies cite cost efficiency as one of the main reasons for deciding to the move the cloud. But, according to a recent CA Technologies report, more steps must be taken to reap the financial benefits of cloud computing.
One key step toward this goal, the IT management solutions firm noted, is automating more processes in the cloud. In a survey of 460 IT decision-makers, many expressed disappointment with the cost savings of their cloud computing and virtualization solutions.
This, according to CA Technologies, largely stems from a lack of automation in the cloud. IT departments are spending too much time and resources dealing with the complex nuances of the cloud. With automation, however, cloud applications tend to run more smoothly.
"Without automation, IT staff can be overwhelmed by the complexities and challenges of managing a highly distributed IT infrastructure consisting of virtual and physical servers, applications and dynamic cloud-based services," said Roger Pilc, general manager of virtualization and automation at CA Technologies. "These complexities can negate any benefits organizations hope to realize as this data shows.
These challenges would be better addressed sooner rather than later, as the cloud is poised for rapid expansion in the near future. A recent In-Stat report estimated the public cloud computing market to grow by 153 percent between 2010 and 2015.
