As federal CIO Vivek Kundra prepares to leave his position next month, he recently urged his successor to continue pushing for government IT reform and to maintain a focus on the cloud.
According to an InformationWeek report, Kundra recently told the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology that he has laid out the plan for IT reform. It is up to his successor, who has not yet been appointed, to follow through on the execution.
"My advice would be to be aware of entropy and make sure that you're really, really focused on execution, not just on policies," Kundra said. "You need to roll up your sleeves and get some work done."
Kundra noted that it is often difficult to secure funding for federal agencies to secure funding for new IT projects. However, he urged his successor to remain focused, noting that innovations in IT are fast-moving and can become obsolete very quickly. Failure to stay on top of trends could result in falling behind on the latest advances.
According to a Computerworld report, Kundra also warned science advisers of the risks of government data sharing. Given the sensitive information maintained by federal agencies, it is important they are cautious in their data sharing practices to avoid data leaks.
