At the recent Cisco Live event, Cisco chief futurist Dave Evans identified cloud computing as one of the 10 leading technologies that will have a significant impact on the world in the next decade.
According to Network World report, Evans noted that more data is now being accessed in the cloud, and the trend doesn't show signs of slowing down. Evans predicted that one-third of all data will pass through the cloud by 2020, the news provider reported.
However, the cloud will not only have an impact on the way businesses approach data. It will also influence the way consumers interact with technology. As Evans noted, the cloud has already enhanced the way people communicate with one another and how they interact with technology.
"Already, the cloud is powerful enough to help us communicate through real-time language translation, increase our knowledge from access to powerful supercomputers, such as Wolfram Alpha, and improve our health using computing platforms like IBM's Watson in new ways," Evans said. "We're able to communicate in much richer ways."
Forrester Research recently put a monetary number to the cloud's impact in the next decade, predicting the global cloud market to reach $241 billion by 2020.
