A group of the most prominent computer hardware, software and internet firms has issued a report to the Commerce Department indicating that cloud computing leadership is needed to create jobs and keep the nation technologically in the lead.
According to a report by Bloomberg, the study was delivered to U.S. Chief Information Officer Vivek Kundra and came with recommendations on how to spur public sector and private sector adoption of cloud computing.
The Obama administration asked the TechAmerica Foundation to generate the report, which was created by a group of 71 companies. According to the study, cloud computing will be as important as the internet itself when it comes to U.S. competitiveness, and actions taken in the next three years will set the stage regarding who will lead the world in cloud computing.
In an interview with Bloomberg, Dan Reed, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s technology policy group said, “Without question, the U.S. is the world leader in cloud computing. This is our market in the world to lose.”
Analysts at IDC forecast that by next year, 85 percent of new internet enterprise applications will be designed to run in a cloud environment.
