While projections of the cloud computing industry have always been optimistic, new reports are revealing that the technology has been adopted at a quicker pace, and by more businesses in a variety of sectors, than was previously believed. Tech Journal South recently reported that a study from one market research firm found a high number of businesses in the U.S. are currently using cloud computing services.

According to the website, the report, compiled by Chadwick Martin Bailey, found that 80 percent of companies are currently using some form of cloud computing services. While this number is high, the source notes that less than one out of every 10 organizations have created a broad, overall cloud computing plan. The report also stated that IT departments are at the forefront of pushing executives to adopt the technology.

"Almost all companies are dealing with increasingly mixed IT environments (external cloud, private clouds, hybrid cloud and non-cloud based internal IT architectures), which raises management and application integration challenges," Chadwick Martin Bailey's vice president of technology and telecom practice Chris Neal told the source.

Gartner Research predicts Software-as-a-Service revenues to grow 20 percent globally this year, rising to $12 billion. Additionally, Forrester Research predicts the overall cloud computing industry to reach $241 billion by 2020.
