Several cloud services are expected to gain popularity among enterprise adopters in 2012, and some experts say Platform-as-a-Service is among the top IT trends set to impact businesses.
According to an InformationWeek report by cloud computing expert Alistair Croll, IT departments will increasingly provide developers and business users with platforms to build applications on, allowing them to write code and use APIs efficiently. Croll said this IT transformation makes PaaS the top enterprise cloud trend of 2012.
"More than anything, 2012 will be a realization that virtual machines are simply a stepping stone to a world in which we write code rather than wrangle boxes," Croll explains. "The best IT teams will be those that embrace private and public platforms as a service and worry about real issues such as lock-in, usage costs, and compliance atop such systems."
The report said more frequent usage of public clouds, the arrival of big data and the consumerization of IT are among the top cloud progressions businesses will encounter this year.
According to a recent survey, 67 percent of companies have implemented or are planning to adopt Infrastructure-as-a-Service and PaaS within the next three to five years.
