IT budgets will increase to accommodate new technologies

Cloud computing has become essential to businesses' infrastructures, and many agree that the cloud's flexibility, unlimited storage space and lower costs can improve employee productivity. Due to the benefits and growing opportunities provided by the cloud, experts predict a surge in cloud adoption among decision-makers.

IT spending will increase
Many institutions are going digital by investing in the cloud, mobile computing, big data and social media. As organizations rely more on technology to run efficiently, employers will increase budgets for their IT departments. According to a recent Gartner report, technology spending will grow from $3.6 trillion in 2012 to $3.7 trillion in 2013 - by 2016, organizations will spend more than $4 trillion on technology. As a result, the role of IT professionals will be crucial to the success of their companies.

Peter Sondergaard, Gartner's senior vice president of research, recently explained how technology will help businesses stay ahead of their competitors at the firm's annual symposium. For example, Sondergaard said that two-thirds of professionals will own a smartphone or tablet by 2016. As more employees participate in the bring-your-own-device movement, companies must develop applications and mobile websites to give users a better experience.

Security should not be an afterthought
As more organizations store accumulated data in the cloud and allow their workers to bring personal devices to the office, IT professionals must outline standards and policies to ensure data protection. Some decision-makers are wary about security in the cloud, however, the best way to eliminate those concerns is by integrating preventative measures into the process. Employers should develop plans that lay out steps to take in the event of a cyberattack or system breach. Business owners should also install security software and firewalls to prevent cybercriminals from accessing confidential information, and educate employees on the importance of passwords and encryption.
