Passwords say a lot about us.<\/span>\u00a0They speak to what we prioritize, what we hold dear.\u00a0<\/span>So<\/span>\u00a0when I\u00a0<\/span>recently\u00a0<\/span>s<\/span>aw my wife\u2019s password included the\u00a0<\/span>kids<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0birthdays and not mine, her priorities were\u00a0<\/span>pretty clear<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>I sure know where I stand<\/span>!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether it’s\u00a0<\/span>children’s<\/span>\u00a0birth dates or dog names,\u00a0<\/span>passwords<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>reveal who we are and what we value<\/span>, as we all\u00a0<\/span>incorporate<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>relevant<\/span>\u00a0aspects of our lives<\/span>\u00a0into our<\/span>\u00a0passwords\u00a0<\/span>to make them\u00a0<\/span>easier to remember. While\u00a0<\/span>convenient<\/span>, this habit could<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>actually<\/span>\u00a0cause\u00a0<\/span>some security mishaps.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A<\/span>s we h<\/span>onor<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>the first Thursday in May<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0better known as\u00a0<\/span>World Password Day<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0let\u2019s take a step back to examine some of these<\/span>\u00a0common password habits<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>s well as discuss some<\/span>\u00a0tips users can follow to secure their online accounts from any potential hackers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Common Password Habits<\/h2>\n

As human beings, we<\/span>\u00a0like to keep\u00a0<\/span>things simple<\/span>\u00a0\u2014 which isn\u2019t\u00a0<\/span>always<\/span>\u00a0a bad thing.<\/span>\u00a0However, it\u2019s not ideal when it comes to password security.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>A<\/span>ccording to\u00a0<\/span>Tech Times<\/span><\/a>, a recent<\/span>\u00a0worldwide<\/span>\u00a0survey conducted by the\u00a0<\/span>United Kingdom\u2019<\/span>s National Cyber Security Centre<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>on<\/span>\u00a0the most common passwords\u00a0<\/span>revealed that\u00a0<\/span>23.2 million people\u00a0<\/span>still\u00a0<\/span>have<\/span>\u00a0passwords mentioning the classic ‘123456’ and<\/span>\u00a0that<\/span>\u00a0‘123456789’\u00a0<\/span>is<\/span>\u00a0used by 7.7 million people worldwide<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Aside from common character sequences, many people<\/span>\u00a0(including my wife)<\/span>\u00a0also use significant dates<\/span>\u00a0or names of their loved ones as passwords.\u00a0<\/span>According to another recent\u00a0<\/span>study conducted by The Harris Poll<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in partnership with Google,\u00a0<\/span>nearly 60% of people studied said their birthday has been integrated into at least one password, 33% use a pet\u2019s name, and 22% use their own name.<\/span>\u00a0Other common habits also include reusing the same password across multiple accounts, writing them down on a piece of paper, keeping them in a file on their computer, or keeping them in a file on Dropbox or a similar platform.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These shortcuts are understandable, as it can be challenging to recall so many complex passwords. In fact, a previous\u00a0<\/span>McAfee survey<\/span><\/a>\u00a0stated that 26% of individuals would be willing to give up pampering (manicures, pedicures, massages, etc.) if they never had to remember a password again.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Additionally, 34% of respondents are most concerned with the ease of remembering their passwords.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Potential Security Risks<\/h2>\n

While\u00a0<\/span>convenient<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>se techniques<\/span>\u00a0are not exactly foolproof<\/span>\u00a0and can lead to some security\u00a0<\/span>concerns<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>That\u2019s because\u00a0<\/span>personalized and simple passwords can<\/span>\u00a0put our data a bit more at risk \u2013 s<\/span>ince hackers can usually find information like birthdays, anniversaries, and pet names online. For instance, that harmless\u00a0<\/span>Facebook quiz<\/span><\/a>\u00a0you were thinking of taking to pass the time can actually reveal your personal information to scammers, allowing them to access your online accounts.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s important users are aware of this risk, but especially as we all navigate\u00a0<\/span>working from home<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>As McAfee\u2019s Raj\u00a0<\/span>Samani<\/span>, Chief Scientist and Fellow, would attest, \u201c<\/span>P<\/span>assword security is essential, especially with the new normal many organizations and people are facing. Staying aware and educated about proper password hygiene is essential for us to keep our data secure as we are connected more than ever these days.\u201d That starts with forming good password habits. Sorry \u201cbaxterthedog1234!\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Secure Your Online Accounts<\/h2>\n

In the post-<\/span>pandemic<\/span>\u00a0world,\u00a0<\/span>my family<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0including my young kids<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0spend<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a06+ hours online daily.\u00a0<\/span>In the last month, m<\/span>y\u00a0<\/span>6-year-old<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>created 10+\u00a0<\/span>online\u00a0<\/span>accounts\u00a0<\/span>to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>do<\/span>\u00a0her\u00a0<\/span>schoolwork<\/span>\u00a0and play<\/span>. In this new reality,\u00a0<\/span>we all have the chance<\/span>\u00a0to build better password habits<\/span>\u00a0for ourselves and teach\u00a0<\/span>them<\/span>\u00a0to our kids<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>That doesn\u2019t mean we have to remember<\/span>\u00a027 completely unique and complex\u00a0<\/span>passwords but<\/span>\u00a0can instead just adopt a few easy best practices<\/span>\u00a0to help\u00a0<\/span>keep\u00a0<\/span>our\u00a0<\/span>credentials safe<\/span>. Use a passphrase<\/h3>\n

According to\u00a0<\/span>ZDNet<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>the FBI recently found that\u00a0<\/span>using a passphrase made up of multiple words in a long string of at least 15 characters<\/span>\u00a0is not only\u00a0<\/span>more difficult<\/span>\u00a0for hackers to crack<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0but also easier for users to remember.\u00a0<\/span>Instead of making a\u00a0<\/span>basic password<\/span>, create a<\/span>\u00a0long<\/span>er<\/span>\u00a0passphrase from the lyrics to your favorite song\u00a0<\/span>or the ingredients used to make your favorite dish.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ensure your passwords are unique<\/h3>\n

Your password or passphrase should be as unique as the information it\u2019s protecting!\u00a0<\/span>If a hacker does manage to guess your password for one of your online accounts,\u00a0<\/span>it\u2019s likely that they will check for repeat credentials across multiple sites.\u00a0<\/span>By using different passwords<\/span>\u00a0or passphrases<\/span>\u00a0for your online accounts,\u00a0<\/span>you can\u00a0<\/span>remain calm and collected<\/span>\u00a0knowing that\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>majority of your data is\u00a0<\/span>secure if one of\u00a0<\/span>your accounts become<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0vulnerabl<\/span>e<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Use a password manager<\/h3>\n
