My more successful peers are those who can navigate through various layers of organizational complexity<\/span><\/i>\u00a0because they know i<\/span><\/i>t takes dedication and expertise from everyone on the team to close deals. Keeping team members informed and constantly collaborating is critical throughout every step of the sales process.\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span><\/i>My experience started in IT after I graduated from college<\/span><\/i>. L<\/span><\/i>ater<\/span><\/i>,<\/span><\/i>\u00a0I joined technical support at McAfee<\/span><\/i>\u00a0and<\/span><\/i>\u00a0was asked if I was interested in a sales engineering role. I didn\u2019t have the experience but was excited to try something new and\u00a0<\/span><\/i>made the decision to leap<\/span><\/i>\u00a0into a sales career.\u00a0<\/span><\/i>My<\/span><\/i>\u00a0experience in technical support helped me get up to speed in sales engineering, and I love it.\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\nBuild relationships and know the business:<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n

<\/b>\u201c<\/span>If you\u2019re focused and determined, you\u00a0<\/span><\/i>can succeed in sales. The most challenging part for me was picking up the sales piece as<\/span><\/i>\u00a0I<\/span><\/i>\u00a0already had a technical background.\u202fIf you want to get into presales,\u00a0<\/span><\/i>half is relating to<\/span><\/i>\u00a0people<\/span><\/i>\u00a0and<\/span><\/i>\u00a0build<\/span><\/i>ing<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>strong\u00a0<\/span><\/i>relationships\u202fwith the customer.\u202fThe other half is\u202fengineering,\u202fand here<\/span><\/i>,<\/span><\/i>\u00a0you need to\u00a0<\/span><\/i>learn<\/span><\/i>\u00a0enough of everything to h<\/span><\/i>old<\/span><\/i>\u00a0knowledgeabl<\/span><\/i>e<\/span><\/i>\u00a0conversations.\u00a0<\/span><\/i>I<\/span><\/i>nvestigat<\/span><\/i>ing<\/span><\/i>\u202fresources quickly\u202fto\u00a0<\/span><\/i>source<\/span><\/i>\u00a0answers for the customer is also important.\u202fBe\u202fconfident\u202fin yourself and your abilities.\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Find your passion, then network:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u201cI<\/span><\/i>\u2019ve<\/span><\/i>\u00a0found a degree in psychology handy in a sales career. It is easier for me to engage with people, read a situatio<\/span><\/i>n<\/span><\/i>\u00a0and build rapport.\u00a0<\/span><\/i>With<\/span><\/i>\u00a0some experience, I s<\/span><\/i>aw<\/span><\/i>\u00a0a future in sales and carve<\/span><\/i>d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0out my career path. I thought the life of a field sales rep was exciting<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u2014<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>greater earnings, more flexibility and so on. Once I knew\u00a0<\/span><\/i>I had found<\/span><\/i>\u00a0my path, I looked for opportunities to network with sales executives, get exposure and learn from them. These are the essential skills when considering a career in sales. Have a few good mentors in your corner who can make some connections for you internally and externally.\u00a0<\/span><\/i>But remember, are responsible for your career<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u2014<\/span>\u00a0you must speak up and make sure your career goals and desired career path are known by leadership.\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I first began my career in sales operations, it helped me immensely to try and understand other\u2019s points of view. You cannot find success in a vacuum and people are complex.
