{"id":104496,"date":"2020-08-03T09:49:29","date_gmt":"2020-08-03T16:49:29","guid":{"rendered":"\/blogs\/?p=104496"},"modified":"2025-08-12T02:12:05","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T09:12:05","slug":"criminals-posing-as-amazon-are-out-to-steal-users-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/privacy-identity-protection\/criminals-posing-as-amazon-are-out-to-steal-users-data\/","title":{"rendered":"Special Delivery: Criminals Posing as Amazon Are Out to Steal User\u2019s Data"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One of the joys of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">online shopping is instant gratification \u2013 your purchases arrive on your doorstep in just a few days!\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Unfortunately, consumers aren&#8217;t the only ones taking advantage of this convenience \u2013 hackers are also using it to trick users into handing over money or data.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Recently,\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/money\/scams-fraud\/info-2020\/amazon-phishing-email.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">AARP<\/span><\/a> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">recounted several scams where cybercriminals posed as Amazon\u2019s customer service or security team as a ploy to steal\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">your\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">personal information.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How These Scams Work<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These scams all begin with an unsuspecting user seeking help from Amazon\u2019s customer support or their security team, only to find the contact information of a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/technology\/cyber-criminals-pose-amazon-steal-aarp-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">fraudster posing as the company<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For example, in one of these scams<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a user called a fraudulent customer support number to help his wife get back into her account<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. However, the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0scammer<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0behind the phone number<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0tr<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ied<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to sell\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the victim<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0a fake $999 computer program to prevent hacking on his own device.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Thankfully, according to AARP, the man refused to send the money.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Another victim reported receiving an email from the &#8220;Amazon Security Team,&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">stating that a fraudulent charge was made on her account and that it was locked as a result. The email\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ask<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0for her address\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and credit or debit card information to unlock her account and get a refund on the fake charge. But upon closer review, the woman noticed that the email address ended in .ng, indicating that it was coming from Nigeria. Luckily, the woman refused to send her information and reported the incident instead.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">No<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t all victims are as lucky. One woman received an email that looked like it was from Amazon and gave the scammers her social security number, credit card number, and access to her devices. Another victim lost $13,300 to scammers who contacted her through a messaging platform stating that someone hacked her Amazon account and that she needed to buy gift cards to restore it.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Steer Clear of These Tricks<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Many of t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">hese fraudsters are taking advantage of Amazon\u2019s credibility to trick unsuspecting\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">out of money and personal data. However, there are ways that users can prevent falling prey to these scams \u2013 and that all starts with staying educated on the latest\u00a0schemes\u00a0so consumers know what to look out for. By staying knowledgeable on the latest threats, consumers can feel more confident browsing the internet and making online purchases. Protect your digital life by following these security tips:\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Go directly to the source<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Be skeptical of emails or text messages claiming to be from organizations with peculiar asks or information that seems too good to be true. Instead of clicking on a link within the email or text, it\u2019s best to go straight to the organization\u2019s website or contact customer service.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Be wary of emails asking you to act<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If you receive an email or text asking you to take a specific action or\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">provide personal details<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, don\u2019t click on anything within the message. Instead, go straight to the organization\u2019s website. This will prevent you from\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">accidentally\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">downloading malicious content.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Additionally, note that Amazon<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0does\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">not<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0ask for personal information like bank account numbers or Social Security numbers in unsolicited emails<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Only use one credit card for online purchases<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">By only using one payment method for online purchases, you can keep a better eye out for fraud instead of monitoring multiple accounts for suspicious activity.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Look out for common signs of scams<\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Be on the lookout for fake websites and phone numbers with Amazon&#8217;s logo.
