70,000 Phishing Emails Sent Impersonating the IRS: How to Stay Protected<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

You wake up, log in to your Outlook, and find an email waiting in your inbox from\u00a0<\/span>support@irs.gov<\/span>. Much to your confusion, the email claims that you have an outstanding account balance that you must pay immediately, or you will face legal charges.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As it turns out, you\u2019re not the only one to receive this message.\u00a0<\/span>According to\u00a0<\/span>Bleeping Computer<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0phishing campaign<\/span>\u00a0was recently discovered<\/span>\u00a0impersonating the IRS, with 70,000\u00a0<\/span>spoofed\u00a0<\/span>emails reaching users\u2019 inboxes.\u00a0<\/span>Let\u2019s unpack how this scheme works.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Watch Out for Spoofed IRS Emails<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

This scam targets Microsoft 365 users and threatens to press legal charges unless the recipient settles an outstanding account balance. And w<\/span>hile some of the telltale signs of a phishing scam are grammar errors and misspellings throughout the body and address of the email, this threat is a little more sophisticated.\u00a0<\/span>To make this threat\u00a0<\/span>appear more credible,\u00a0<\/span>scammers use the email\u00a0<\/span>support@irs.gov<\/span>, causing recipients to believe that the email actually did originate from the IRS.\u00a0<\/span>The email also appears to have no spelling errors at first glance, further increasing its legitimacy to an unsuspecting user.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This scam is not\u00a0<\/span>foolproof<\/span>, however. Upon further investigation,\u00a0<\/span>a recipient would see that the email\u2019s header reveals the real sending domain: shoesbagsall.com. What\u2019s more<\/span>, the reply-to field redirects the replies to\u202f<\/span>legal.cc@outlook.com<\/span>\u202finstead of the IRS support mailing address.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To further entice users into falling for this scheme, scammers threaten arrest or other legal charges and tell recipients<\/span>\u00a0that they will forward the emails to their employer to withhold the fake outstanding amounts from their wages.<\/span>\u00a0Additionally, the<\/span>\u00a0emails also\u202finstruct the targets to immediately reply with\u202fpayment details to avoid having their credit<\/span>\u00a0affected.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Be skeptical of emails or text messages claiming to be from organizations with peculiar asks or information that seems too good to be true. Instead of clicking on a link within the email or text, it\u2019s best to go straight to the organization\u2019s website or contact customer service.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Be cautious of emails asking you to act<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

\u00a0<\/span>If you receive an email\u202for text\u202fasking you to\u00a0<\/span>download software or pay a certain amount of money<\/span>, don\u2019t click on anything within the message. Instead, go straight to the organization\u2019s website. This will prevent you from downloading malicious content from\u202fphishing\u202flinks<\/span>\u00a0or forking over money unnecessarily<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hover over links to see and verify the URL<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

\u00a0<\/span>If someone sends you a\u202fmessage\u202fwith a link, hover over the link without actually clicking on it. This will allow you to see a link preview. If the URL looks suspicious, don\u2019t interact with it and delete the\u202fmessage\u202faltogether.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
