Add increased technology use to this state of chronic stress and there\u2019s no doubt that families everywhere sit in the crosshairs of any number of mental health risks.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Cumulative Stress<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>After nearly a year of isolation, stop-and-start school days, restricted travel, and the added layer of political tension, many are experiencing feelings of hopelessness that pandemic circumstances only magnify.<\/p>\n<p>According to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rutgers.edu\/news\/more-young-adults-are-thinking-about-suicide-and-death-national-survey-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">nationwide survey\u00a0<\/a>by researchers from Rutgers and Harvard, more than one-third of young adults in the U.S. report having thoughts of hopelessness, while nearly half show symptoms of depression.<\/p>\n<p>These numbers are <em>ten times higher<\/em> than what was exhibited in the general population before the COVID-19 pandemic, say researchers.<\/p>\n<p>Pandemic stress is also impacting younger children. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/69\/wr\/mm6945a3.htm?s_cid=mm6945a3_w#F1_down\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centers for Disease Control\u00a0<\/a>(CDC) reports mental health visits have spiked for young children and adolescents since the pandemic started.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Tech Connection<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>A 2016 <em>Time <\/em>cover story offers critical insight into why anxiety and depression have continued to rise among young people and the role technology plays in that equation.<\/p>\n<p><em>Time<\/em> writer Susanna Schrobsdorff describes the crisis this way: \u201cThey are the post-9\/11 generation, raised in an era of economic and national insecurity. They\u2019ve never known a time when terrorism and school shootings weren\u2019t the norm. They grew up watching their parents weather a severe recession, and, perhaps most important, they hit puberty at a time when technology and social media were transforming society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Janis Whitlock, director of the Cornell Research Program on Self-Injury, added that technology is the primary driver feeding young people\u2019s anxiety and depression. \u201cIt\u2019s that they\u2019re in a cauldron of stimulus they can\u2019t get away from, or don\u2019t want to get away from, or don\u2019t know how to get away from.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Steve Schneider, a high school counselor, likened the constant pressure many teens feel from their phones to a scab that\u2019s constantly being picked. \u201cAt no point do you get to remove yourself from it and get perspective.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Headline Stress Disorder<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Even with a vaccine signaling an end in sight to a degree of our stress, other tensions are proving to be relentless, causing what some doctors are calling \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/327516\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">headline stress disorder<\/a>,\u201d a condition in which non-stop news cycles trigger intense feelings of worry and helplessness.<\/p>\n<p><em>So how can we help our kids bear up under the weight of it all? <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Staying especially connected to one another during this time and alert to the <a href=\"https:\/\/services.aap.org\/en\/pages\/2019-novel-coronavirus-covid-19-infections\/clinical-guidance\/interim-guidance-on-supporting-the-emotional-and-behavioral-health-needs-of-children-adolescents-and-families-during-the-covid-19-pandemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">signs of emotional distress<\/a> is one way parents can help kids balance their digital and mental health. Here are a few other ways to consider.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>7 Ways to Build Your Family\u2019s Digital, Mental Health<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Prioritize digital health. <\/strong>Kids need help with limits, especially when school schedules, team sports, and gatherings are in flux. Pay attention to your child\u2019s social media use \u2014 how much and what kind \u2014 and consider\u00a0establishing time limits and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/en-us\/parental-controls\/mcafee-safe-family.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">filtering the content<\/a> that\u2019s flowing across their screens.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pay attention to online friend groups.<\/strong> Kids connect with new people online all the time through gaming platforms, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/consumer\/family-safety\/becybersmart-equipping-kids-to-stay-safe-on-new-video-apps\/?hilite=%27apps%27\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">group chats, and apps<\/a>. With school schedules in limbo, in-person friend groups can easily form online and expose your child to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/consumer\/family-safety\/reports-of-online-predator-on-the-rise-how-to-keep-your-kids-safe\/?hilite=%27kids%27%2C%27online%27\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">number of online risks<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Follow the \u2018Three Rs.\u2019<\/strong><strong> Routine\u00a0<\/strong>(make a schedule and stick to it);\u00a0<strong>Relationship\u00a0<\/strong>(go above and beyond to connect 1-1); and\u00a0<strong>Reassurance<\/strong>\u00a0(remind kids they are safe and that everything is going to be okay \u2014 quash rumors).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Make time to talk. <\/strong>Not all signs of emotional distress will be outward; some will be subtle, and some, even non-existent. That\u2019s why it\u2019s essential to consistently take the time to assess how your kids are doing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Help process distressing events. <\/strong>Getting to the root of a child\u2019s anxiety often means helping them identify the deeper fears and \u201cwhat ifs\u201d and them learn to distinguish between what they can and cannot control.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Practice focusing on facts. <\/strong>A big part of #5 is helping kids understand the facts (quash rumors) about alarming events or conditions is one way to help them feel more in control of what\u2019s happening around them. This includes coaching them in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/consumer\/family-safety\/wheres-the-truth-online-building-up-your-familys-digital-discernment\/?hilite=%27critical%27%2C%27thinking%27\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">critical thinking<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/consumer\/family-safety\/7-conversations-to-help-develop-your-familys-digital-literacy-iq\/?hilite=%27media%27%2C%27literacy%27\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">media literacy skills<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Model &amp; encourage healthy habits. <\/strong>Physical health is intertwined with mental health. Especially during times of crisis, encourage and model good habits like exercising, eating well, meditation and deep breathing, and getting enough sleep.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The silent storms beneath this pandemic will continue to surface and teach us for years to come. Until then, be encouraged that no one has the \u201cwhat to do,\u201d figured out or the parental superpower to control the uncontrollable.
