When a traumatic road accident changed the course of Shiva\u2019s life, he had two options \u2013 give up\u00a0on\u00a0life or give life his best shot. For Shiva, there was only one obvious choice. Through his unrelenting willpower and sheer determination, he was able to overcome all odds.<\/p>\n

Shiva shares\u00a0his deeply inspirational story below:<\/b><\/p>\n

A Tragic Accident<\/h2>\n

My\u00a0<\/span><\/span>j<\/span><\/span>ourney at McAfee<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span>tarted in 2011 when I\u00a0<\/span><\/span>joined<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>compan<\/span><\/span>y.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>In<\/span><\/span>\u00a02013, my life was turned upside down<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0I was on a road trip with\u00a0<\/span><\/span>a\u00a0<\/span><\/span>few<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>friends whe<\/span><\/span>n\u00a0<\/span><\/span>we\u00a0<\/span><\/span>got<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in<\/span><\/span>\u00a0a\u00a0<\/span><\/span>car<\/span><\/span>\u00a0accident. Although I was fortunate enough to survive, unlike two of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>my<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>friends, I suffered from a severe nerve injury that left me paralyzed<\/span><\/span>\u00a0from the<\/span><\/span> neck down. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Financial Challenges <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

The next few months were some of the roughest of my life. Due to the extent of my injuries, I spent several months recuperating in the hospital<\/span>. Soon,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>I\u00a0<\/span>hit my\u00a0<\/span>limit\u00a0<\/span>for\u00a0<\/span>medical insurance<\/span>\u00a0coverage<\/span>. No one is ever prepared to face such a financial situation and I was no different. However, I was extremely fortunate\u00a0<\/span>that\u00a0<\/span>McAfee came forward\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>support<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0me in every possible way<\/span>, both<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>financially and emotionall<\/span>y<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0With McAfe<\/span>e\u2019s support,\u00a0<\/span>I was able to<\/span>\u00a0receive the best treatment<\/span>\u00a0for my needs<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n<\/span>The\u00a0<\/span><\/span>R<\/span><\/span>oad to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>R<\/span><\/span>ecovery<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

I spent close to 10 months in the hospital and\u00a0<\/span>doing<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>rehab,<\/span>\u00a0slowly<\/span>\u00a0picking up the pieces of my life again. Even simple things like sitting or talking to someone took me a great deal of effort<\/span>. However,<\/span>\u00a0giving up was n<\/span>ever<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>an option for me<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0My doctors encouraged me to engage mentally, and that’s when I slowly started<\/span>\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0contribut<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0at work\u00a0<\/span>again.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Team Support <\/span><\/h2>\n

Before my accident, I led two projects for my team. \u00a0Even though my mobility was restricted, I still have the ability to think.\u00a0\u00a0So, my team came forward and encouraged me to work again. I started at a slow pace, mostly talking on the phone and sharing my thoughts with my team.\u00a0\u00a0My team served as my hands and legs, coding and working on my unfinished projects. My leaders and team members turned out to be my biggest strength. They would visit me often to cheer me up and we would celebrate special occasions together. I was overwhelmed by their love and support.<\/p>\n

Returning to the Workplace<\/h2>\n

Finally, it was time to get back to the office.\u00a0When I started walking a little, I\u00a0<\/span>slowly\u00a0<\/span>got back to work in a phased manner. McAfee gave me the flexibility<\/span>\u00a0that<\/span>\u00a0I needed to put together the pieces of my life.\u00a0 Although it was wonderful to be back,\u00a0<\/span>returning didn\u2019t come\u00a0<\/span>without its challenges. I could not\u00a0<\/span>drive\u00a0<\/span>to work<\/span>\u00a0anymore<\/span>. For some time, my teammates helped me get to the office<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>O<\/span>n other occasions, I would hire a taxi.\u00a0<\/span>O<\/span>n\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>days\u00a0<\/span>when it rained,\u00a0<\/span>i<\/span>t was\u00a0<\/span>challenging to find a cab<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0given\u00a0<\/span>Bangalore<\/span>\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0traffic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Joining McAbility<\/h2>\n

Around the same time,\u00a0<\/span>McAbility<\/span> was formed in India. I became a part of it and brought my commute issue to <\/span>McAfee\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>knowledge.\u00a0<\/span>I’m glad to say that McAfee\u00a0<\/span>did<\/span>\u00a0not\u00a0<\/span>hesitate\u00a0<\/span>to arrange a special\u00a0<\/span>cab exclusively for me.\u00a0<\/span>McAfee welcomed and acted on e<\/span>very suggestion that I shared\u00a0<\/span>regarding improving <\/span>mobility<\/span>\u00a0issues<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>the office<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Continuing Life<\/h2>\n

W<\/span>ith the support\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>my family,\u00a0<\/span>team members\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>McAfee, life<\/span>\u00a0slowly<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>started\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>get<\/span>\u00a0back to normal. I even got a chance to visit my colleagues in the Cork office,\u00a0<\/span>which<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>was a life changing moment for me. The support that I received from everyone around me was a crucial part of my recovery. Even now when I\u2019m in\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>office, people\u00a0<\/span>stop by and ask me how I am\u00a0<\/span>doing<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and it<\/span>\u00a0is<\/span>\u00a0heartwarming.<\/span><\/p>\n

Life Mantra<\/h2>\n

\u201cAny emotion, if it is sincere, is involuntary<\/span>\u201d<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>b<\/span>y Mark Twain. If you\u00a0<\/span>want to be\u00a0<\/span>a good person or be\u00a0<\/span>kind to someone,<\/span>\u00a0it will\u00a0<\/span>come to you<\/span>\u00a0naturally<\/span>. You wouldn\u2019t have to try too hard.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
