More and more social platforms are coming up with safer ways for younger kids to access their apps. The most recent announcement comes from Facebook who is reportedly creating a version of\u00a0Instagram for kids<\/a>\u00a013 and under.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a family safety win to see so many companies (YouTube,\u00a0TikTok, and Facebook\u00a0have parental control<\/a> channels) making changes.\u00a0That\u2019s because currently,\u00a0kids under 13\u00a0have no problem getting\u00a0around an app\u2019s age restrictions,\u00a0a decision that can expose\u00a0them to\u00a0risks\u00a0such as cyberbullying, stranger connections, and inappropriate content.<\/p>\n

With apps making an overall shift toward safer experiences, areas of concern for families still exist especially since kids are increasingly\u00a0connecting\u00a0with social media companies before they enter middle school.\u00a0Here are just a few things to consider as your child moves into the world of social networking, regardless of his or her age.<\/p>\n

Family Talking Points<\/strong><\/h2>\n

  1. The emotional side of social. <\/strong>Not all social networks\u00a0work the same. Instagram is photo-based, which means a child\u2019s experience may impact self-esteem and mental health\u00a0more so\u00a0than a network that is solely text-based. Consider talking\u00a0to your child\u00a0about the\u00a0risks\u00a0often associated with Instagram<\/a> such as body image,\u00a0cyberbullying,\u00a0mental health issues.\u00a0Regardless of age, it\u2019s important to keep close tabs on a child\u2019s mental health if they spend time online.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    1. Talk about the risks. <\/strong>The years before kids begin using the trendier social networks, is a critical window to have honest, age-appropriate conversations. Consider discussing what kinds of things to look out for online, including bullying, predatory behavior, and inappropriate content.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      1. Explain monetization.\u00a0<\/strong>While social networks are a way of life for teens today, there\u2019s so much more going on behind the scenes. Consider discussing the concept of monetization with your kids so they are aware of the businesses churning behind social networks. Cultivating the next generation of untapped users is a huge piece of a tech company\u2019s strategy. Creating safer avenues for younger kids is a win for parents. However, introducing kids to a platform as early as possible is a big win for tech companies as well.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

Discuss personal privacy.\u00a0<\/strong>One of the biggest risks to kids online \u2014 and often the one kids care about the least \u2014 is privacy and how social networks collect and use kids\u2019 data. It\u2019s never\u00a0<\/span>too early to start talking about privacy and\u00a0ways to\u00a0reign in your family\u2019s digital footprint<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          1. Start building digital skills. <\/strong>The tween years are critical to preparing your child to eventually spend more time on social platforms for kids over 13. In addition to privacy, consider other\u00a0important topics such as\u00a0digital literacy<\/a>, cyberbullying,\u00a0online scams<\/a>, why\u00a0parental controls<\/a>\u00a0matter, and\u00a0other important digital skills<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            The window between 9-12 is an important one when it comes to teaching\u00a0kids\u00a0digital skills and influencing\u00a0their digital behavior. It\u2019s never too early to begin these conversations.
