Google’s Android operating system has been a boon for the average consumer. No other operating system has given so much freedom to developers and hardware manufacturers to make\u00a0quality devices at reasonable prices. The number of Android phones in the world is astounding. That success comes with a price, however.<\/p>\n

A recent report from our own McAfee Mobile\u00a0Research team has found\u00a0malicious apps with hundreds of thousands of downloads\u00a0in the Google Play store. This round of apps\u00a0poses as simple wallpaper, camera filters, and picture editing, but they hide their\u00a0nature till after they\u2019ve been installed on your device.<\/p>\n

On the bright side,\u00a0Google Play performs a review for every app to ensure that they are legitimate, safe, and don\u2019t contain malware\u00a0before they\u2019re allowed on the Play store. However,\u00a0enterprising criminals regularly find ways to sneak malware past Google\u2019s\u00a0security checks.<\/p>\n

How attackers sneak malware into the Play store.<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n

When developers upload their apps to the Play store<\/span>\u00a0for approval<\/span>, they\u00a0<\/span>have to<\/span>\u00a0send supporting<\/span>\u00a0documents that tell Google what the app is, what it does and what age group it\u2019<\/span>s intended for. By sending Google a \u201cclean\u201d version of their app, attackers can\u00a0<\/span>later\u00a0<\/span>get their\u00a0<\/span>malicious<\/span>\u00a0code\u00a0<\/span>i<\/span>nto the store<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>via a future update\u00a0<\/span>where it sits and waits for someone to download it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Once installed, the app contacts a remote server, controlled by the attackers, so it can download new parts of the app that Google has never seen.\u00a0<\/span>You can think of it as a malware add-on pack that installs itself on your device without you realizing it.<\/span>\u00a0By contacting their own server for the malware files, attackers sneak around Google security checks and can put anything they want on your device.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What does the malware do?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The current round of malware we\u2019re seeing hijack your SMS<\/span>\u00a0messages so they can make purchases through your device, without\u00a0<\/span>your knowledge.<\/span>\u00a0Through a combination of hidden\u00a0<\/span>functionality<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>abuse of\u00a0<\/span>permissions<\/span>\u00a0like\u00a0<\/span>the ability to read notifications<\/span>, that simple looking wallpaper app can send\u00a0<\/span>subscription requests\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>confirm them<\/span>\u00a0as<\/span>\u00a0if<\/span>\u00a0it were you. These apps will regu<\/span>larly run up large bills through purchasing subscriptions to<\/span>\u00a0premium rate services<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0The more troubling part is how they can read any message that you receive, possibly exposing your personal information to attackers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How can I protect myself?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

To start,\u00a0<\/span>a comprehensive and cross-platform solution like <\/span>McAfee Total Protection<\/span><\/a>\u00a0can help detect threats\u00a0<\/span>like\u00a0<\/span>malware and alerts you if your device<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0h<\/span>ave<\/span>\u00a0been infected.\u00a0<\/span>I\u2019d also like to share some tips our Research team has shared with me.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How to spot suspicious apps before you install them<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

1. <\/span><\/b>Check the\u00a0reviews<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Before you hit that install button, take a good look at an app\u2019<\/span>s reviews. Do they look like they were written by real people? Do the account names of the reviewers make sense? Are\u00a0<\/span>people leaving real feedback, or are\u00a0<\/span>the majority of<\/span>\u00a0comments things like, \u201cWorks great. Loved it.\u201d with no other information?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Scammers can easily generate fake reviews for an app to make it look like people are engaging with<\/span>\u00a0the developers. Look out for vague reviews that don\u2019t mention the app or what it does<\/span>, nothing but\u00a0<\/span>five-star<\/span>\u00a0reviews, and generic sounding account names like, \u201cgirl345834\u201d. They\u2019re<\/span>\u00a0probably bots, so<\/span>\u00a0be wary.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2. <\/span><\/b>Look up the app\u00a0developers<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Search for the app\u00a0<\/span>developers\u2019<\/span>\u00a0company and see if they have a website.<\/span>\u00a0Having a website doesn\u2019t\u00a0<\/span>guarantee<\/span>\u00a0an app is legitimate, but\u00a0<\/span>it\u2019s<\/span> another good indicator of how trustworthy a company\u2019s app is. Through their website, you should be able to find out where their<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>team is<\/span>\u00a0based<\/span>, or at least some personal information about the company. If\u00a0<\/span>they\u2019re hiding that information, or there\u2019s no site at all, that might be a good sign to try a different app.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3. <\/span><\/b>Don\u2019t replace apps you already\u00a0have<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

A lot of malicious apps offer features that your phone already provides, like a flashlight or photo viewer. Unless there\u2019s a very specific reason why you need a separate ap<\/span>p to do something your device already does,\u00a0<\/span>it’<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0not recommended to use a third-party app. Especially if it\u2019s free.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4. <\/span><\/b>Check the app\u00a0permissions<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

App permissions must be clearly stated on the ap<\/span>p\u2019<\/span>s page\u00a0<\/span>in order to<\/span>\u00a0get into the Google Play store. They\u2019re found near the bottom of the page, along with developer information. Check the per<\/span>missions every app asks for before you install it and ask yourself if they make sense. For example, a photo editor doesn\u2019t need access to your contacts list, and\u00a0<\/span>wallpapers don\u2019t need to have access to your location data. If the permissions don\u2019t make sense for the type of app, steer clear.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

5. <\/span><\/b>Add antivirus to your mobile\u00a0device<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Mobile devices are vulnerable to malware and viruses, just like your computer. By\u00a0<\/span>installing\u00a0<\/span>McAfee protection to your mobile device<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>you can secure your mobile data, protect\u00a0<\/span>your privacy, and even find lost devices.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Protect yourself, and your loved ones<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Android is one of the most popular operating systems on the planet, which means the rewards for creating malware for Android devices are well worth it. <\/span>It\u2019s unlikely that Android malware is going away any time soon, so staying safe means being<\/span>\u00a0cautious with the things you install<\/span>\u00a0on your devices.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Y<\/span>ou can protect yourself by installing McAfee\u00a0<\/span>Total Protection on your mobile device<\/span>\u00a0and reading the permissions apps ask for when you<\/span>\u00a0install them.
