No other operating system has given so much freedom to developers and hardware manufacturers to make\u00a0quality devices at reasonable prices. The number of Android phones in the world is astounding. That success comes with a price, however.<\/p>\n<p>A recent report from our own McAfee Mobile\u00a0Research team has found\u00a0malicious apps with hundreds of thousands of downloads\u00a0in the Google Play store. This round of apps\u00a0poses as simple wallpaper, camera filters, and picture editing, but they hide their\u00a0nature till after they\u2019ve been installed on your device.<\/p>\n<p>On the bright side,\u00a0Google Play performs a review for every app to ensure that they are legitimate, safe, and don\u2019t contain malware\u00a0before they\u2019re allowed on the Play store. However,\u00a0enterprising criminals regularly find ways to sneak malware past Google\u2019s\u00a0security checks.<\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How attackers sneak malware into the Play store.<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When developers upload their apps to the Play store<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0for approval<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, they\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0send supporting<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0documents that tell Google what the app is, what it does and what age group it\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s intended for. By sending Google a \u201cclean\u201d version of their app, attackers can\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">later\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">get their\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">malicious<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0code\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">i<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">nto the store<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">via a future update\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">where it sits and waits for someone to download it.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Once installed, the app contacts a remote server, controlled by the attackers, so it can download new parts of the app that Google has never seen.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">You can think of it as a malware add-on pack that installs itself on your device without you realizing it.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0By contacting their own server for the malware files, attackers sneak around Google security checks and can put anything they want on your device.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What does the malware do?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The current round of malware we\u2019re seeing hijack your SMS<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0messages so they can make purchases through your device, without\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">your knowledge.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Through a combination of hidden\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">functionality<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">abuse of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">permissions<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0like\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the ability to read notifications<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, that simple looking wallpaper app can send\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">subscription requests\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">confirm them<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0as<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0if<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0it were you. Do they look like they were written by real people? Do the account names of the reviewers make sense? Are\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">people leaving real feedback, or are\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the majority of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0comments things like, \u201cWorks great. Loved it.\u201d with no other information?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Scammers can easily generate fake reviews for an app to make it look like people are engaging with<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0the developers. Look out for vague reviews that don\u2019t mention the app or what it does<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, nothing but\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">five-star<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0reviews, and generic sounding account names like, \u201cgirl345834\u201d. They\u2019re<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0probably bots, so<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0be wary.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2. <\/span><\/b><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Look up the app\u00a0developers<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Search for the app\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">developers\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0company and see if they have a website.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Having a website doesn\u2019t\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">guarantee<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0an app is legitimate, but\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it\u2019s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> another good indicator of how trustworthy a company\u2019s app is. Through their website, you should be able to find out where their<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">team is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0based<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, or at least some personal information about the company. They\u2019re found near the bottom of the page, along with developer information. Check the per<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">missions every app asks for before you install it and ask yourself if they make sense. For example, a photo editor doesn\u2019t need access to your contacts list, and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">wallpapers don\u2019t need to have access to your location data.
