Even<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>as\u00a0<\/span>the internet kept us connected with family and friends during the pandemic,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>people remain<\/span>\u00a0understandably<\/span>\u00a0eager to reconnect in person as vaccines roll out and restrictions ease.\u00a0<\/span>In fact,\u00a0<\/span>people are<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>making travel plans accordingly<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Nearly two-thirds (64%) of people worldwide said that\u00a0<\/span>they\u2019re<\/span>\u00a0planning to travel for leisure this year. And, as always,\u00a0<\/span>they\u2019re<\/span>\u00a0bringing their devices with them.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These are\u00a0<\/span>a few<\/span>\u00a0of the top-line<\/span>\u00a0findings from our\u00a0<\/span>2021 Consumer Security Mindset Report: Travel Edition<\/span>, which<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>garnered\u00a0<\/span>responses<\/span>\u00a0from more than 11,000 people aged 18 to 75 in eleven countries across North and South America, Europe, Asia, and the South Pacific.\u00a0<\/span>More broadly, this survey\u00a0<\/span>provides insight into people\u2019s plans and preferences for travel and how they view online security<\/span>\u00a0while traveling<\/span>\u2014<\/span>particularly<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>after relying heavily on the internet\u00a0<\/span>at home during the pandemic<\/span>\u00a0for more than a year<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

People are <\/span><\/b>m<\/span><\/b>ore\u00a0<\/span><\/b>c<\/span><\/b>onnected and\u00a0<\/span><\/b>m<\/span><\/b>ore\u00a0<\/span><\/b>p<\/span><\/b>rotected<\/span><\/b>\u00a0in\u00a02021<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

I<\/span>ndeed<\/span>, people<\/span>\u00a0feel more connected by the internet today than they did prior to the onset of COVID-19<\/span>\u00a0with\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>significant<\/span>\u00a076% of respondents<\/span>\u00a0stating as much<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>In light of<\/span>\u00a0th<\/span>at increasing reliance on the internet<\/span>, 61% reported implementing more protection for their devices, connected homes, and online activities in general. This was particularly the case in nations like India (86%), Mexico (79%), and Brazil (68%). However, other nations trended much lower than the average, such as\u00a0<\/span>the UK (47%) and France (34%).<\/span> In the U.S., that figure was lower than the international trend with roughly half of the people implementing more protection.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Internet<\/a><\/h3>\n

People are planning on traveling once again<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

A<\/span>s\u00a0<\/span>called out earlier<\/span>, people are taking the first steps toward leisure travel\u00a0<\/span>once\u00a0<\/span>again. Only\u00a0<\/span>12% of people in the U.S\u00a0<\/span>said that they were planning on traveling internationally<\/span>\u00a0compared to a global average of 16%<\/span>, w<\/span>hile nations like<\/span>\u00a0Singapore (30%), the UK (25%), and Germany (24%)\u00a0<\/span>trending well above the average<\/span>. In contrast, the outlook for domestic leisure travel\u00a0<\/span>appears<\/span>\u00a0exceptionally<\/span>\u00a0strong, particularly for respondents in Australia (88%), India (79%) and the U.S. (77%)<\/span>\u00a0who plan to travel as such<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The pandemic has shaped\u00a0<\/span>people\u2019s views on where<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>they\u2019d<\/span>\u00a0like<\/span>\u00a0to stay<\/span>, with 62% s<\/span>t<\/span>a<\/span>t<\/span>ing that their preference for lodging has changed<\/span>\u00a0this year<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Well over one-third of respondents in the U.S., Australia, Indonesia, and Canada said that s<\/span>taying with family and friends\u00a0<\/span>as their preferred option.<\/span>\u00a0Globally speaking, hotel and motel accommodations topped the list at 41%<\/span>. V<\/span>acation home rentals entered the mix as well with roughly 25% of respondents saying a rental was part of their plan.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Current <\/span><\/b>a<\/span><\/b>ttitudes on\u00a0<\/span><\/b>c<\/span><\/b>onnecting to\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Wi-Fi while\u00a0traveling<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Yet how have attitudes changed toward connecting to networks outside of the home, particularly after the past year saw\u00a0<\/span>the majority of<\/span>\u00a0people improve their security at home?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For a baseline, we found that 80% of respondents said that\u00a0<\/span>they\u2019ve<\/span>\u00a0connected a device when visiting a home\u00a0<\/span>or place\u00a0<\/span>that is not their own.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The devices they mentioned<\/span>\u00a0most<\/span>\u00a0include laptops, streaming devices, Bluetooth speakers, and gaming devices as well.\u00a0<\/span>To<\/span>\u00a0connect those devices<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>they\u2019ll<\/span>\u00a0use the home network of the friend\u2019s or rental home where they\u2019re staying (48%<\/span>)<\/span>\u00a0or the network provided by the hotel<\/span>\u00a0where they\u2019re staying<\/span>\u00a0(48%).\u00a0<\/span>And while in-between places, public Wi-Fi remains a popular means of network connection at 50%, along with airport Wi-Fi (41%) plus<\/span>\u00a0transit<\/span>\u00a0Wi-Fi (31%).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\"Internet<\/a><\/p>\n

As to how secure people feel on those networks, the answer varies greatly. While people expect low risk or no risk at all on their home network (85%) or a friend\u2019s home (73%),\u00a0<\/span>they\u2019re<\/span>\u00a0far less apt to trust other networks.\u00a0<\/span>In general, they see Wi-Fi networks as most vulnerable to cyber threats than any other network or device at 68% and<\/span>\u00a0feel most at risk connecting to networks in hotels (25%) and rentals (21%)<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite these findings,\u00a0<\/span>only 47%<\/span>\u00a0people said they take the same online security measures that they\u00a0<\/span>take<\/span>\u00a0at home when\u00a0<\/span>they\u2019re<\/span>\u00a0on holiday or vacation. Similarly, just\u00a0<\/span>52%<\/span>\u00a0of people check if the network they are joining is secure before they connect.\u00a0<\/span>Of that, 22% say they\u00a0<\/span>don\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0check because they feel the network poses no threat and another 26% say that they simply don\u2019t know how to check.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Protecting your computers and devices while\u00a0<\/span><\/b>you\u2019re<\/span><\/b>\u00a0away<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

As travel becomes an actual possibility for people once again,\u00a0<\/span>it\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0an opportunity to remember just how important security is\u00a0<\/span>outside the home<\/span>. Whether people are at home or away, there will be banking to do, chances to shop online, and\u00a0<\/span>moments to<\/span>\u00a0stream a few shows while\u00a0<\/span>at the airport or on the road<\/span>. Protecting laptops and mobile devices for travel become extra important\u00a0<\/span>when using public, airport, and public Wi-Fi, as those networks can expose people to more threats than their home networks.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With that, here are five\u00a0<\/span>things<\/span>\u00a0people can do to<\/span>\u00a0protect themselves and others<\/span>\u00a0while traveling<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Connect with caution.<\/span><\/b>\u202fBe cautious when connecting to public Wi-Fi while on vacation and make<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>sure the Wi-Fi is secure and attached to a trusted source. Ensure that you\u00a0<\/span>don\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0conduct any<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>fin<\/span>ancial transactions or share any personal details while on public Wi-Fi.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Look into using a virtual private network (VPN).<\/span><\/b>\u00a0A\u00a0<\/span>VPN<\/span><\/a>\u00a0can provide bank-grade encryption that protects your data while you shop, bank, or simply surf online when connected to public Wi-Fi.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Consider a\u00a0<\/span><\/b>holistic security solution<\/span><\/b><\/a>.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0Understand what tools are available to you\u00a0<\/span>in order to<\/span>\u00a0give<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>you peace of mind that your identity and personal information across\u00a0all of\u00a0our devices are<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>safeguarded this summer travel season.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Update your software.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0Before you travel, check for any software updates on your devices.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Updates often fix security bugs\u00a0<\/span>in addition to adding features or providing performance boosts.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Keep devices protected and close.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0Distracted vacationers are the perfect target for thieves<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>looking to steal devices<\/span>\u2014whether\u00a0<\/span>that\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a phone, laptop, tablet, or game. Ensure accounts have multi-factor authentication to double-check the authenticity of digital users in case the device gets in the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>wrong hands.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
