It was recently revealed that the new <\/span>\u00a0feature may not be as secure as\u00a0<\/span>it was\u00a0<\/span>believed\u00a0<\/span>to be.\u00a0<\/span>Users were quick to\u00a0<\/span>point out\u00a0<\/span>a critical flaw that\u00a0<\/span>reveals their shipping address\u00a0<\/span>to the recipient\u00a0<\/span>when sending money<\/span>\u00a0through PayPal<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Shortly after, others also discovered that\u00a0<\/span>Twitter Tip Jar<\/span><\/a>\u00a0could reveal a user\u2019s email address even if no transaction took place.\u00a0<\/span>Only a limited number of accounts can receive payments<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0including creators, journalists, experts, and nonprofits. However, anyone can send\u00a0<\/span>tips<\/span>, making the new feature\u2019s vulnerabilities\u00a0<\/span>more\u00a0<\/span>concerning<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The reason why\u00a0<\/span>PayPal<\/span>\u00a0displays the sender<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s shipping address is because Twitter categorize<\/span>s\u00a0<\/span>tipping as a payment transaction<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Therefore,\u00a0<\/span>recipients\u00a0<\/span>would receive the sender\u2019s payment and shipping details<\/span>\u00a0by default<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>just<\/span>\u00a0like any other vendor would in a\u00a0<\/span>typical<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>online\u00a0<\/span>transaction.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While\u00a0<\/span>your\u00a0<\/span>information i<\/span>s\u00a0<\/span>not shared publicly<\/span>, exposing it to recipients poses increased security risks<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Picture this:<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Hackers recognize notable recipients and hack their accounts to steal their information\u2014including your personal address.\u00a0<\/span>They\u00a0<\/span>then use your information to carry out targeted phishing attacks and\u00a0<\/span>ransomware.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>You lose your data, your device becomes infected and therefore unusable,\u00a0<\/span>and you\u2019re even more susceptible to\u00a0<\/span>identity fraud<\/span><\/a>\u2014<\/span>all stemming from an attempt to leave a digital tip<\/span>\u00a0as a token of goodwill<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Twitter Tip Jar is a prime example of a good idea\u00a0<\/span>gone awry<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Twitter released the\u00a0<\/span>feature to support notable members of their community<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>many of whom prefer to use Twitter due to the level of anonymity that is allowed by the platform \u2014\u00a0<\/span>it does<\/span>\u00a0not<\/span>\u00a0require your real name<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0which potentially leads to more anonymous interactions than other social media sites. For this reason,<\/span>\u00a0Twitter users are more vulnerable to\u00a0<\/span>privacy concerns\u00a0<\/span>when using the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Tip Jar<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to\u00a0<\/span>privacy concerns, hackers\u00a0<\/span>could\u00a0<\/span>also misuse the Tip Jar feature through fraudulent payment disputes.\u00a0<\/span>If\u00a0<\/span>someone tips a Twitter user using the Tip Jar and later files a “dispute” regarding the payment, PayPal requires the recipient pay a $20 dispute charge. Now imagine if\u00a0<\/span>a malicious entity<\/span>\u00a0does this to a\u00a0<\/span>recipient\u00a0multiple times. The user could quickly accumulate hundreds of dollars in dispute charges<\/span>\u00a0instead of tips, causing\u00a0<\/span>the direction of money flow\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>effectively be reversed<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0financial stress on the recipient.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
