Among the many major shifts in lifestyle during the COVID-19 pandemic, the way we used healthcare was one of the most significant.\u00a0Providers limited in-person visits, elective procedures were delayed, and\u00a0we\u00a0avoided hospitals.\u00a0In response, we\u00a0went online and started using\u00a0telehealth and other\u00a0virtual solutions in ways we never had before.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our latest consumer mindset survey confirms this\u00a0was more than a passing trend, showing an almost 50% rise\u00a0since the beginning of\u00a0the\u00a0pandemic\u00a0in the use of PCs\u00a0and\u00a0Mobile devices to access\u00a0health\u00a0information, meet virtually with health care providers,\u00a0and\u00a0manage\u00a0prescriptions.\u00a0Survey respondents also showed\u00a0they adapted by increasing their usage\u00a0of smart\u00a0fitness\u00a0devices,\u00a0like Fitbits, to track their personal health.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The hidden cost of convenience<\/span><\/b> \u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Navigating the healthcare system and accessing more of our services\u00a0through the web\u00a0means more of our personal information is now online.\u00a0From patient intake forms to test results, a great deal of data about our health, including confidential information like vaccination records, is potentially\u00a0available.\u00a0Survey respondents\u00a0confirmed that they\u00a0shared and accessed their personal health information across the internet, despite 1\/3 or more of respondents having concerns for\u00a0their\u00a0privacy and security of their personal information.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This trend\u00a0hasn\u2019t\u00a0gone unnoticed by cybercriminals. In fact, the US Department of Health and Human Services\u00a0is currently investigating\u00a0nearly 800\u00a0health-related\u00a0data breaches impacting\u00a0nearly\u00a060\u00a0million individuals. All of which is to say that telehealth\u00a0advances\u00a0may help\u00a0us\u00a0avoid sitting in a doctor\u2019s office, but\u00a0we need to be more mindful about our security when using these new online services.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Maintaining your online wellness<\/span><\/b> \u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Despite the adoption of\u00a0many\u00a0telehealth\u00a0and online health services, security\u00a0was still a\u00a0concern for many of our survey respondents.\u00a0A majority said the\u00a0primary\u00a0reason\u00a0they\u00a0do\u00a0not\u00a0use smart devices for\u00a0their\u00a0personal\u00a0health\u00a0was\u00a0because of\u00a0privacy and security concerns.\u00a0Fortunately, just as there is preventive\u00a0medicine,\u00a0there are also preventive cybersecurity\u00a0measures\u00a0we can take to keep our personal data safer online.\u00a0Here are a few we recommend:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  • Use a VPN when conducting a\u00a0Telehealth\u00a0video call with a physician, accessing your medical records, or managing your prescriptions<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      \n
    • A VPN is a Virtual Private Network, a service that protects your data and privacy online. It creates an encrypted tunnel to keep you anonymous by masking your IP address. This means you can keep prying eyes\u00a0away from your confidential conversations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
        \n
      • Use a proven\u00a0security\u00a0solution such as McAfee Total Protection on all devices<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
          \n
        • All-in-one protection is\u00a0a great way to keep your devices, identity, and privacy safer as you go about life online.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
            \n
          • Only use HTTPS connections when accessing an\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0telehealth<\/span>\u00a0website.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
              \n
            • Look at the web address in your browser to confirm it starts with HTTPS.\u00a0These connections add security to your data transfers and help prevent data scraping.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
                \n
              • Use two-factor authentication when authenticating into important accounts.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
                  \n
                • In addition to your password\/username combo, you\u2019re asked to verify who you are with something that you \u2013 and only you \u2014 own, such as a mobile phone. Put simply: it uses two factors to confirm it\u2019s you.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
                    \n
                  • Practice safe password hygiene, don\u2019t use the same passwords across your accounts and especially not for accessing your health information<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
                      \n
                    • A password manager is a great way to organize and generate keys for your login.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                      The shift to managing our health online comes with a few safety considerations, but by following the steps above,\u00a0we can enjoy\u00a0convenience\u00a0and access to a healthier life online and off.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
