As the new school year gets underway, many students will be returning to the classroom in-person, while others will opt to continue hybrid or remote learning indefinitely. Unfortunately, for families choosing the latter, remote learning could come at the expense of their online privacy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the RAND Corporation\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>2020\u00a0research report<\/span><\/a>, one in five U.S. school districts plan to offer online learning even after the pandemic ends. Many school districts are waiting to review the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) latest recommendations. Either way, there\u2019s no better time for a data privacy refresh.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Privacy-forward policies<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n

Protecting your child\u2019s privacy\u00a0while\u00a0remote learning\u00a0requires\u00a0a three-part investment of\u00a0parents, students, and schools.\u00a0One of the first steps in that direction is\u00a0to understand your\u00a0district\u2019s\u00a0privacy practices. To do that,\u00a0ask to\u00a0take a closer look at\u00a0its approach to\u00a0data\u00a0consent,\u00a0secondary\u00a0data\u00a0use,\u00a0as well as its data collection and\u00a0retention\u00a0practices.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Common privacy gaps<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n

According to\u00a0<\/span>The Center for Democracy and Technology<\/span><\/a>, there are five areas where schools may put a child\u2019s privacy at risk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Digital assessments<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n

Using student data to assess needs and launch connectivity and device programs can pose a privacy risk. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ask:\u00a0To assess overall digital access, the school collected my child\u2019s data. How will that data be used?<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Data sharing<\/span><\/b><\/h4>\n

Sharing\u00a0student\u00a0data with\u00a0third\u00a0parties,\u00a0such as\u00a0broadband and\u00a0device\u00a0providers,\u00a0is a common practice that can pose a privacy risk.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ask:\u00a0To connect\u00a0my remote learner,\u00a0the school\u00a0shared my\u00a0child\u2019s data\u00a0with the provider. Can the school ensure that data will be used by the\u00a0third-party\u00a0responsibly?\u00a0May I view the data use policy?\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Monitoring protocols<\/span><\/b> \u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Schools now have apps that allow teachers to monitor student progress.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ask:\u00a0With more teacher access to student devices and desktops, how can the school ensure that my child\u2019s other data is secure?\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Loaner device security<\/span><\/b><\/h4>\n

Ongoing\u00a0security and\u00a0device\u00a0management\u00a0requirements\u00a0should be established\u00a0to avoid viruses and malicious activity.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ask:\u202fWhat security\u00a0measures\u00a0are in place\u00a0on school-owned devices\u00a0to protect my child\u2019s\u00a0content or personal information?\u00a0Will\u00a0my child\u2019s\u00a0activity be tracked?\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

5. Low digital literacy IQ<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

A lack of\u00a0digital\u00a0literacy and\u00a0security\u00a0knowledge\u00a0on the part of students, families and even schools can put a child\u2019s privacy at risk.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ask: What digital literacy resources or training do you offer teachers, staff, students and families?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Got Governance?<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n

One sign your child\u2019s privacy is in good hands is if your school has a solid Data Governance Policy (DGP) that staff, teachers, and students follow. A DGP establishes schools processes and structures for overseeing the school\u2019s approach to management, usability, availability, quality and security of data and technology.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Going a step further, a privacy-aware school will engage students, families, teachers, and administrators (and even third-party providers) about the importance of data use and closing privacy gaps.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4 ways to get proactive with data privacy<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n

1. Discuss, define privacy<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Rather than make assumptions, discuss\u00a0<\/span>what privacy is with your child<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0For example, with\u00a0more\u00a0time online, consider\u00a0<\/span>parental controls<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to filter risky content. Likewise, talk to your\u00a0child about\u00a0how to identify\u00a0phishing scams\u00a0and consider\u00a0investing\u00a0in\u202f<\/span>security software\u202f<\/span><\/a>that scans for malware and untrusted sites.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Protect personal info<\/span><\/b><\/h4>\n

If your child uses video apps such as Zoom to connect remotely, be sure that personal information\u2014such as birthdate, address,\u00a0photographs,\u00a0or\u00a0a\u00a0nickname\u2014isn\u2019t\u00a0accidently\u00a0visible in the background.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Optimize privacy settings<\/span><\/b> \u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Whether your child uses Zoom, a chat app, website or another\u00a0EdTech\u00a0platform for learning, set privacy settings to provide maximum protection. Following the directions under \u201csettings\u201d of any new app are fast and easy.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4. School directory opt-out<\/span><\/b><\/h4>\n

Under\u00a0FERPA<\/span><\/a>, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, schools must notify you of your right to opt out of Directory Information at the start of the school year. Don\u2019t opt-out? Schools can share\u202fDirectory Information about their child with third parties without parental or student consent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If we could point to\u00a0a\u00a0positive consequence of the pandemic,\u00a0it would be that with the\u00a0sudden\u00a0spike in\u00a0connectivity\u00a0during quarantine,\u00a0data\u00a0privacy concerns\u00a0became\u00a0more\u00a0prevalent than ever\u2014that shift deserves an A+.\u00a0Moving forward, it\u2019s critical for parents and schools to work together\u00a0to create practices that protect online privacy for all students\u2014on-site or remote.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
