The hybrid working model is met with mixed reviews from employees and business security teams alike.\u00a0For some employees, a\u00a0clearer\u00a0separation\u00a0between\u00a0work and home is\u00a0a\u00a0welcome\u00a0change.\u00a0<\/span>CTV News<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>reports 66% of Canadian respondents to an International Workplace Group poll say they\u00a0are looking forward to splitting their working hours between the office and home.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For business security teams who are\u00a0just\u00a0catching their breath after the monumental shift to a remote workforce, they\u00a0are\u00a0now\u00a0gearing up for the new\u00a0online safety\u00a0challenges posed by\u00a0the\u00a0hybrid work model.\u00a0<\/span>According to a\u00a0<\/span>VMware Canada Threat Report<\/span><\/a>,\u00a086% of security professionals agree that cyberattacks aimed at their organizations have become more sophisticated since the onset of the pandemic.\u00a0Additionally,\u00a091% of global respondents cite employees working from home as the\u00a0cause of cyberattacks.\u00a0<\/span>Challenges\u00a0of the hybrid workforce\u00a0include the constant back-and-forth of company-issued devices, the lack of control over home office setups, and mixing\u00a0personal and company devices with company and personal business\u00a0respectively.\u00a0<\/span>For\u00a0example, if you pay your bills\u00a0or shop online\u00a0using your work device, it opens\u00a0several new avenues for a hacker to walk right onto the corporate\u00a0network.\u00a0When your guard is down even a little bit when you\u00a0are\u00a0off the clock, you could fall victim to e-skimmers, fake login pages, or phishing scams.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Best Practices for Mitigating Attacks in the Hybrid Workplace<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

No matter how advanced your company\u2019s threat detection system, hackers know where vulnerabilities lie and are on the hunt to\u00a0exploit them. Check out these tips to ensure you are not the weak link in your organization.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Use a VPN<\/span><\/b><\/h4>\n

A\u00a0<\/span>virtual private network<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(VPN)\u00a0is a service that scrambles\u00a0online browsing data, making it impossible for nefarious characters to decipher your activity. This is an excellent way to deter hackers from\u00a0tracking your movements and picking up sensitive pieces of information.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

VPNs are essential if you are working in a public area,\u00a0sharing a wireless network with strangers, or using a\u00a0Wi-Fi\u00a0connection\u00a0that is not password protected. Public\u00a0Wi-Fi networks\u00a0are\u00a0notoriously easy pickings for hackers seeking\u00a0entry into unsuspecting users\u2019 devices.\u00a0On the days where you are not in the office, make sure your wireless connection is secure.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Lockaway your passwords\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/h4>\n

While a VPN is an excellent tool,\u00a0security measures and your accounts are\u00a0vulnerable\u00a0without\u00a0a strong and private password\u00a0or passphrase\u00a0to protect\u00a0them.\u00a0The gigantic\u00a0<\/span>Colonial Pipeline<\/span><\/a>\u00a0hack is being blamed on\u00a0a hacker gaining entry through an unused VPN\u00a0that was not secured with\u00a0<\/span>multifactor authentication<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0Multifactor authentication is an online safety\u00a0measure where more than one method of identity verification is needed to access\u00a0the valuable\u00a0information\u00a0that lies\u00a0within password-protected accounts.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Consider using a password manager to\u00a0organize all your passwords and logins.\u00a0<\/span>Password managers<\/span>\u00a0remember\u00a0each\u00a0pairing\u00a0so you don\u2019t have to, plus\u00a0most\u00a0managers\u00a0are\u00a0secured with\u00a0multifactor authentication.\u00a0A\u00a0<\/span>password manager<\/span><\/a>\u00a0makes it easier to add variety to your passwords and prevents you from ever having to write them down.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Secure work-issued devices<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Professionals who travel between their home and an office are\u00a0likely\u00a0transporting\u00a0their devices back and forth, increasing the\u00a0number of\u00a0opportunities\u00a0for\u00a0devices to be forgotten\u00a0at either location\u00a0or in transit.\u00a0As convenient as it may be, never use your personal device for official business.\u00a0Even if you pride yourself on sound\u00a0online safety\u00a0habits, your company device likely has more defenses ingrained in its hardware than\u00a0your personal devices.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With your personal devices, you should carefully vet everything you download. With your work-issued devices, this vetting process is even more important as company information is at stake.\u00a0The\u00a0<\/span>Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario<\/span><\/a>\u00a0states that employees should never download applications to their work devices without permission from\u00a0the IT team.\u00a0Apps and programs often have security vulnerabilities that could open a gateway for hackers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Practice a personal Zero Trust model<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Zero Trust<\/span><\/a>\u00a0is\u00a0a security philosophy that is\u00a0exactly\u00a0what\u00a0it sounds like: trust no\u00a0one.\u00a0Businesses are employing Zero Trust models\u00a0to greatly limit who has access to sensitive data sources.\u00a0Adopt\u00a0your own personal\u00a0Zero Trust philosophy concerning your\u00a0passwords, logins, and device access.\u00a0This means never sharing passwords or log in details, especially over email, instant messenger, or over a\u00a0<\/span>video conference<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0Hackers commonly eavesdrop on all three mediums. Also, even your most trusted coworker could\u00a0mishandle your passwords and login details, such as writing\u00a0them\u00a0down and leaving\u00a0them\u00a0in a public\u00a0place.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A key aspect of the Zero Trust model is only granting employees access to platforms that are vital to their job. Sharing\u00a0your logins with coworkers who may not be authorized for using that platform undermines all the hard work the IT team does to keep tabs on data access.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Work Intelligently, Diligently, and Securely<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Every time you turn on the nightly news, another\u00a0<\/span>ransomware attack<\/span><\/a>\u00a0has hit another organization, each one bigger than the last. This heightened prevalence is a reflection on the wiliness of hackers, but also the number of security holes every company\u00a0must\u00a0plug.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
