We\u2019ve all been there. It\u2019s the middle of the night and you wake up to a sad and sniffly kiddo shuffling into your room. Yup, looks like someone has a temperature. You phone the on-call doctor to make sure it\u2019s nothing serious and then set an alarm so you can make an appointment when the office opens. Yet this time that doctor\u2019s visit could go a little differently. It may not take place in the office at all. You may be offered a chance to see the doctor with a telemedicine visit.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What is telemedicine?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Telemedicine has been in use for some time. For several years now,\u00a0it\u2019s connected patients to\u00a0health care services\u00a0using live video and sometimes\u00a0special diagnostic tools\u00a0that pass along information via the internet.\u00a0Overall, it\u2019s a way of going to the doctor without\u00a0actually\u00a0going\u00a0to the doctor\u2019s office.\u00a0Historically, it\u2019s done\u00a0a great job\u00a0of\u00a0caring for\u00a0people who live in\u00a0remote\u00a0locations\u00a0and for people\u00a0with ongoing conditions that need\u00a0long-term\u00a0monitoring.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That all changed last year. Telemedicine\u00a0visits\u00a0saw a big spike during the early days of the pandemic, partly\u00a0to\u00a0help\u00a0keep the spread of the virus in check\u00a0and to protect vulnerable patients.\u00a0Even\u00a0though that\u00a0spike\u00a0has\u00a0since\u00a0tapered off,\u00a0one study found that\u00a0<\/span>about 40 percent of consumers in the U.S. say they\u2019ll use telemedicine moving forward\u2014<\/span><\/a>and our own research\u00a0from\u00a0earlier this year\u00a0put that worldwide figure at nearly\u00a030 percent.\u00a0Telemedicine seems to be taking root.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While\u00a0telemedicine\u00a0leaves\u00a0many families\u00a0with more healthcare options,\u00a0it\u00a0may leave\u00a0them with\u00a0a few\u00a0more\u00a0questions about their security as well.\u00a0After all, our health data is a precious thing. In the U.S.,\u00a0<\/span>HIPPA privacy standards protect our information<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and consultations with healthcare professionals.\u00a0However, online visits add an entirely new dimension to that.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Make your telemedicine visit safer with these tips<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

If\u00a0your health care provider recommends\u00a0a telemedicine visit for you or\u00a0your child,\u00a0it can be both a convenient and safe experience with a little prep on your part.\u00a0With a few\u00a0straightforward security\u00a0measures lined up\u00a0(some of which you may already have in place),\u00a0you\u00a0can\u00a0make\u00a0sure that\u00a0everyone\u2019s\u00a0private health\u00a0information\u00a0will be\u00a0safe and secure\u00a0during your virtual visit.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Protect your devices<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

A great first step for a safer\u00a0telemedicine visit is to\u00a0<\/span>protect your devices with comprehensive security software<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0Like security software protecting you while you manage your finances, file your taxes online, and so forth, it will help protect you while sharing your private health information.\u00a0Plus,\u00a0it will give you plenty of\u00a0other features that\u00a0can\u00a0help you manage your passwords, protect your identity, safeguard your privacy\u00a0in general, and more.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Be sure to protect your tablets and smartphones while you\u2019re at it, even if you\u2019re not using them for telemedicine. With all the shopping and banking we do on those devices, it\u2019s\u00a0a smart move to protect\u00a0them in addition to laptops and computers.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Use strong, unique passwords<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Your telemedicine visit may\u00a0require\u00a0setting up a new account and password, one that\u00a0will\u00a0add to your growing list\u00a0considering\u00a0all the\u00a0banking, social media, and payment apps\u00a0you\u00a0probably\u00a0use. Plus, there are the umpteen other passwords you have for your\u00a0online\u00a0shopping accounts, your children\u2019s school records, your taxes, and so on. Don\u2019t give into the temptation of re-using an old password or making a simple one. Hackers count on that, where stealing one password means stealing several\u2014and gaining access to multiple accounts in one blow.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When you set up your account,\u00a0<\/span>use\u00a0a\u00a0strong, unique password<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0This may also be a good time to get a handle on all\u00a0your\u00a0passwords with a password manager.\u00a0<\/span>Also found in comprehensive security software, a password manager<\/span><\/a>\u00a0can create and securely store strong and unique passwords for you,\u00a0which can keep you safe and make your day a little easier too.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Use a VPN<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

A VPN<\/a>, or virtual private network, offers\u00a0a strong layer of additional protection when you\u2019re transmitting health data or simply having a private conversation about your health with a professional. A VPN\u00a0creates an encrypted tunnel to keep you\u00a0and your activity\u00a0anonymous. In effect,\u00a0your data is scrambled and hidden to anyone outside your VPN tunnel, thus making your private information difficult to collect.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Like many of the security steps, we\u2019re talking about here, using a VPN offers benefits beyond telemedicine. A VPN is a must when using public Wi-Fi, like at airports and cafes, because it makes a public connection private (and safe from prying eyes). Additionally, it\u2019s also great for use at home when taking care of sensitive business like your banking or finances.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Look out for phishing attacks and scams<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

If you\u2019re searching for a telemedicine provider online, keep an eye out for sketchy links and scams. The sad thing with\u00a0the\u00a0increased use\u00a0of telemedicine is that hackers have clued in and are looking for targets. One way you can stay safer is to\u00a0<\/span>use a web advisor with your browser<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that can identify potentially hazardous links and sites. Anti-phishing technologies in your\u00a0<\/span>security software<\/span><\/a>\u00a0can help as well by preventing\u00a0email-based scams\u00a0from\u00a0reaching\u00a0your inbox\u00a0in the first place.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

5. Check in with your provider<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Even better than searching online, consider contacting your pediatrician or doctor\u2019s office for a recommendation, as they can point out the best healthcare options for you and your concerns\u2014and let you know if a telemedicine visit is the best course of action for you in the first place.\u00a0This way,\u00a0you can\u00a0get comfortable with what your visit will look like,\u00a0find out what special\u00a0apps (if any)\u00a0are used, and how your care provider will protect your privacy.\u00a0Also, you can decide which device you will use and where you\u2019ll use it so that you feel at ease during your virtual visit.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

(Of course, don\u2019t go online for your virtual appointment in a public place.) Look for a space where you can\u2019t be overheard by neighbors and passers-by\u2014preferably someplace like your bedroom where you can be comfortable as well. So as always,\u00a0if\u00a0you have\u00a0a health concern,\u00a0call\u00a0your doctor or pediatrician\u2019s\u00a0office for guidance.\u00a0They\u2019ll know the best path forward.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
