1. Update your devices.<\/span><\/b> Manufacturers often advise consumers to update their software to the latest version and enable further security features. Updating your devices regularly increases the chances that you\u2019ll receive security improvements soon after they become available. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Do not connect to your smart cameras, baby monitors, and other devices through public Wi-Fi.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0Accessing these devices via a smartphone app from an unprotected network can compromise the security of your devices.\u00a0Use a VPN<\/a> or a secure cellular data connection instead.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Use two-factor authentication<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Our banks, many of the online shopping sites we use, and numerous other accounts use\u00a0<\/span>two-factor authentication<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0help validate\u00a0that we\u2019re who we say we are\u00a0when logging in. In short, a username and password combo is an example of one-factor authentication. The second factor in the mix is something you, and only you, own\u00a0or control, like your mobile phone.\u00a0Thus,\u00a0when you log in and get a prompt to enter a security code that\u2019s sent to your mobile phone, you\u2019re taking advantage of two-factor authentication. If your IoT device supports two-factor authentication as part of the login procedure, put it to use and get that extra layer of security.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Secure your internet router<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Your router acts as the internet\u2019s gateway into your home. From there, it works as a hub that connects\u00a0all\u00a0your devices\u2014computers, tablets, and phones, along with your IoT devices as well. That means it\u2019s vital to keep your router secure. A quick word about routers: you typically access them via a browser window and a specific address that\u2019s usually printed somewhere on your router.\u00a0Whether\u00a0you\u2019re renting your router\u00a0through your internet provider\u00a0or\u00a0have\u00a0purchased\u00a0one,\u00a0the internet provider\u2019s \u201chow to\u201d guide or\u00a0router\u00a0documentation can\u00a0step\u00a0you through this process.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The first thing to do is change the default password of your router if you haven\u2019t done so already. Again, use\u00a0<\/span>a strong method of password creation<\/span><\/a>. Also, change the name of your router. When you choose a new one, go with name that doesn\u2019t give away your address or identity. Something unique and even fun like \u201cPizza Lovers\u201d or \u201cThe Internet Warehouse\u201d are options that mask your identity and are memorable for you too. While you\u2019re making that change, you can also check that your router is using an encryption method, like WPA2, which\u00a0helps secure communications to and from your router. If you\u2019re unsure\u00a0what to do, reach out to your internet provider or\u00a0router manufacturer.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Set up a guest network specifically for your IoT devices<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Just as you can offer your\u00a0human\u00a0guests secure access that\u2019s separate from your own devices, creating an additional network on your router allows you to keep your computers and smartphones separate from IoT devices. This way, if an IoT device is compromised, a hacker will still have difficulty accessing your other devices, like computers and smartphones, along with the data and info that you have stored on them. You may also want to consider investing in\u00a0<\/span>an advanced internet router that has built-in protection<\/span>\u00a0and can secure and monitor any device that connects to your network.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Update!<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

We mentioned this above, yet it\u2019s so important\u00a0that it calls for a second mention:\u00a0make sure you have the latest software updates for your IoT devices.\u00a0That will\u00a0make sure you\u2019re getting the latest functionality from your device,\u00a0and updates often contain security upgrades. If there\u2019s a setting that lets you receive automatic updates, enable it so that you always have the latest.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

5. Protect your phone<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

You\u2019ve probably seen that you can control a lot of your connected things with your smartphone. We\u2019re using them to set the temperature, turn our lights on and off, and even see who\u2019s at the front door. With that, it seems like we can add the label \u201cuniversal remote control\u201d\u00a0to\u00a0our smartphones\u2014so protecting our phones has become yet more important. Whether you\u2019re an\u00a0<\/span>Android<\/span><\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span>iOS<\/span><\/a>\u00a0device\u00a0user, get security software installed on your phone so you can protect all the things it accesses and controls\u2014in addition to you and the phone as well.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
