However,\u00a0in a pandemic job market,\u00a0cybercriminals\u00a0are working overtime to devise schemes that\u00a0exploit job seekers\u2019 need for financial security.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">According to the\u00a0Better Business Bureau,\u00a0Americans lost more than\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nebraska.tv\/news\/local\/job-scams-on-the-rise-as-people-continue-to-look-for-work-at-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">$62 million\u00a0in\u00a0employment scams<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0in\u00a02020.\u00a0In addition, with federal unemployment benefits\u00a0ending this month, that number is expected to rise as more people\u00a0head\u00a0online to look for work.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Online hiring scams can be\u00a0hard\u00a0to detect because scammers\u00a0advertise job\u00a0opportunities\u00a0the same way legitimate employers do\u2014via\u00a0online ads,\u00a0job sites, and\u00a0popular\u00a0social networking channels.\u00a0They\u00a0promise\u00a0job seekers opportunity and hope but are carefully\u00a0designed\u00a0to the\u00a0applicant\u2019s\u00a0personal information or\u00a0deceive\u00a0them into sending money.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Online Hiring\u00a0Scams<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Here are\u00a0just a few examples of\u00a0online\u00a0jobs\u00a0scams\u00a0targeting older adults\u00a0and\u00a0a few\u00a0ways to avoid\u00a0becoming a victim.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Bogus LinkedIn job offers<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Last year the Federal Trade Commission\u00a0(FTC)\u00a0identified and shut down a scam on LinkedIn\u00a0in which a company\u00a0sent\u00a0potential job candidates\u00a0a\u00a0direct message promising\u00a0a\u00a0high-paying job\u00a0still unpublished to the public.\u00a0The catch? Potential candidates were asked to pay a fee of up to\u00a0$2,500 to set up the interview.\u00a0Variations of this scam, using LinkedIn\u00a0as a channel,\u00a0may be in play.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Fraudulent employers<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Some scammers\u00a0are getting\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aarp.org\/money\/scams-fraud\/info-2021\/linkedin-job-search.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">especially bold<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and posting job openings using the names, logos, and even staff names from legitimate companies\u00a0to lure unsuspecting job seekers into\u00a0fake interviews. After\u00a0a questionnaire\u00a0or\u00a0interview,\u00a0the\u00a0company informs the\u00a0applicant\u00a0they have\u00a0the job. From there,\u00a0they collect\u00a0personal information as if it\u2019s part of a legitimate onboarding process\u2014only the job doesn\u2019t exist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Work-from-home scams\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">A popular scam involves a company offering job seekers a six-figure income working from home with the promise you can \u201cbe your own boss \u201cand \u201cset your own schedule.\u201d The catch: Job seekers must first purchase a starter kit or some form of online coaching package to qualify for the \u201copportunity.\u201d After that, the company can disappear or charge the consumer thousands of dollars more for training that never comes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Identity theft<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">According to the BBB, some scams include job seekers submitting personal information to potential employers only to have that information\u00a0stolen and\u00a0used\u00a0for\u00a0fraudulent schemes.\u00a0Some scams even involve online interviews that appeared\u00a0legitimate; only\u00a0the\u00a0interviewer\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0appear on camera.\u00a0The\u00a0bogus\u00a0employer asks for personal data\u00a0during the interview,\u00a0including banking information needed for direct\u00a0depositing a paycheck.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Spot &amp; Stop a Scam<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<h4><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Awkward hiring process<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">If\u00a0an\u00a0employer\u00a0attempts to\u00a0hire\u00a0you by text, email, or a\u00a0photo-only\u00a0video interview, beware.
