It\u2019s a fair question. And the\u00a0quick\u00a0answer is this: the more you use social media, the more those companies likely know.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The moment you examine the question more closely, the answer takes on\u00a0greater\u00a0depth. Consider how much we use social media for things other than connecting with friends. While that was\u00a0the original intent behind social networks, the role of social media has since evolved into something far more expansive. We use it to get our news, stay up to date on when artists will drop a new release, and\u00a0sometimes\u00a0reach out for customer service on a company\u2019s social media page.\u00a0In some cases,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.experian.com\/blogs\/ask-experian\/is-it-safe-to-use-facebook-to-login-on-other-sites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">we use our social media accounts to log into other sites and apps<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pay.facebook.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">we even make payments through social media<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Taken together, all of those likes, taps, clicks, links, and time spent reading or watching videos\u00a0can\u00a0add up\u00a0and paint a\u00a0detailed\u00a0picture of who you are.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Why are they collecting all this information?\u00a0Largely, it\u2019s for two reasons:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1. Generally, they\u00a0may\u00a0know:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"4\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Basic information\u00a0about you and the devices you use:<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0This\u00a0includes personal\u00a0information\u00a0that people include in their profiles,\u00a0such as names, birthdates, locations,\u00a0relationships,\u00a0and\u00a0gender. This\u00a0can\u00a0extend\u00a0to\u00a0other\u00a0identifiers\u00a0like\u00a0IP addresses, unique\u00a0device ID\u00a0numbers, connection type, connection speed, your network, other devices on your network. Also, device behavior\u00a0can get tracked as well. Per Instagram\u00a0(as of October 2021):\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We collect the content,\u00a0communications\u00a0and other information you provide when you use our Products, including when you sign up for an account, create or share content, and message or communicate with others. This can include information in or about the content you provide (like metadata), such as the location of a photo or the date a file was created.<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Another consideration is\u00a0how\u00a0the\u00a0content you interact with on\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">other sites\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">may be shared with social media companies in return. Some social media companies partner with other third parties to gather this data, which is used to round out your user profile in yet more detail. Interactions are things like visiting their website or logging into their app with Facebook. Off-Facebook activity does not include customer lists that businesses use to show a unique group of customers relevant ads.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The good news here is that\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/01\/29\/facebook-gets-info-about-you-from-other-web-sites-how-to-stop-it.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">you can\u00a0take control of the Off-Facebook Activity setting with a few clicks<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">No doubt about it, the content you create and interact with, both on\u00a0the social\u00a0media sites\u00a0and sometimes\u00a0off of\u00a0them as well,\u00a0can\u00a0generate information about you that\u2019s\u00a0collected by social media companies.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Limiting what social media companies know about you<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Short of\u00a0deleting your accounts altogether, there are several things you can do to take control and limit the amount of information you share.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1. (Note that this will likely only delete data associated with your account. Review your privacy and account settings.<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Each platform will have its own settings and\u00a0options, so\u00a0give them a look.\u00a0Here, you can determine which information advertisers are allowed to use to serve up ads to you,\u00a0set rules for\u00a0facial recognition,\u00a0enable\u00a0or disable\u00a0location history, and much more.\u00a0If possible, do this from your computer or laptop rather than your smartphone. In return for using these free services, social media companies collect information on us which they use to improve their platforms and generate revenue. It\u2019s all there for you to see in the various terms of use associated with your social media accounts.
